NMPRO #62 – Todd Smith Interview 1 of 3

May 27th, 2009 Email This

I interview another industry Icon in Mr. Todd Smith.  He has earned over $20 million dollars in commissions and is one of the most sought after trainers in our Profession.  In the first of our 3-part interview, we discuss Burning Desire and some of the reasons for the Profession’s less than stellar image in some circles.  Question of the Day (QOTD):  If you were to rate your desire for success in Network Marketing on a scale from 1 to 100, what would it be?

Great…. I love this interview. Powerful thoughts! Initial days of training the new distributor are so vital.

I am always interested when I hear the expression "part time". I once went to a presentation by a guy from India who was way up high in Primerica. He said "All I ask of you is to give me half a day. Half a day, 12 hours".
  • kellie hubler
I really liked when he said that the ONLY time NWM doesn't work is when a person quits. It always works if we stick with it and work at it! LOVE IT!!!!!
  • Alfie
Burning desire is really important to have in our profession. You also need to have sense of urgency. Great interview.

How you start someone is how that leg will grow.

"Be the kind of sponsor that you wish you had." I'm on it!!

    1000

    100

    brilliant thanks
  • Todd just tells it like it is. This guy would have made it in Network Marketing even if he didn't have a great sponsor. His desire comes through loud and clear.

QOTD: If you had a higher rating than 100, I would rate myself higher. Based on your rating system, I rate my desire for success in Network Marketing 100 with the understanding that 100 is the highest rating.

  • Great interview. If I were to rate myself, I would definitely say that my desire for success in NWM is 100! I can't imagine anything that I would rather do. I truly do love this! Do I love rejection? NO! But, wow do I love it when I am able to help someone earn a good enough income to be able to pay for their prescription meds when they could not pay it before. It is so awesome to be able to help others!
  • This is GREAT! Discipline and getting out of the comfort zone and Just Do It! 100% ACTION 0% talk.
  • If you do what most people won't do for (3) years you can do what most people can't do for the rest of your life!! I know in NR I can achieve this therefore... this is my mantra!!

    Cheers Eric!
ps- LOVE your coaching... always have!
  • An absolutely incredible interview. Todd is just right on with every point he made.
    Thank you,
  • Hello
I've been amazed. Very good interview. Very well said.
Well, I can rate my desire for success in NM in 100. I will be successful, I know that. I need to increase my knowledge.
  • "Having the discipline to do what you know you should do even when you don't feel like doing it." - Awesome statement! THAT to me is the key to success right there. Even a guy earning $400K in real estate wanted to get into Network Marketing - that's gotta tell us something .
    Great interview Eric.
    QOTD: 100!!
  • cwhelan
Have not just a desire, but a Burning Desire and just don't quit ! That is what i take away from this segment.
  • Jose Padilla
Wow! the numbers thatTodd talks about when getting started in the business are awesome. Wish we would give more details about how he invited in order to get 40 people in his first presentation.
    QOTD 100...do or die
    Cheers
    Jose
  • I also liked the quote: "the only time it doesn't work is when people quite".

Persistence will take you there. We've seen it many times but for some of us it gets difficult to dominate.

    I liked Todd's style.

Awesome interview by an awesome example of success!

I would have to rate my desire as burning at the least. And the level is over the top. This interview shows me, that with the right mentor and the willingness to follow through, the sky's the limit. Thanks for this post.
  • Jeffrey Romualdi
Wow! Thanks Eric. Tod's interview was probably the best I've seen yet & many were terrific. Keep it up, this is exactly what our industry needs.

    Best, Jeff Romualdi
  • Great interview, very incouraging. Yes, burning desire is what wakes me up in the morning and keeps me up late at night.

QOTD. I still experiance ups and downs in my network marketing career but I would say my desire level is never less than 90%, sometimes it's 150%. LOL.
  • Well Eric,

That would be a coaching tricky question that if I had to answer, I'd realize I need to work in the same extent that I DESIRE... or it would be in vain ;) So My QOTD answer is: 100... now I have to go to work!

I mostly liked: "the only time it doesn't work is when people quite"

    Powerful!!
  • Another great reality check.
Great interview. Looking forward to the next segment.
  • Yes, don't try - DO! And in the process bring honor to being a Network Marketing Professional so that everyone can distinguish between the best possible example, as opposed to the other.

Great interview Eric. I'm enjoying everyone of your shows and getting a much needed dose of encouragment. Because of so much negativity around me, my desire was smoldering but I can feel the embers heating up. I've made your show part of my personal development. I also get so much out of other people's comments as well.
  • I did real estate in Australia for most of 2008 and the number or realtors that make it in Australia is very low. I think any profession like real estate and network marketing that require you to go out and get paid based on performance can be challenging for even the most talented individuals. Of course, that is where the big bucks are unless you become a surgeon, movie star, or sports star.
  • AgeLocLady
In all honesty, my rating varies. There are times I am all out at 100%. There are times when I'm at 85. It's life. But what separates me from others is I never quit. I may be exhausted, take half a day and read a book, take a nap. Sometimes I'm rocking and rolling by 6am and don't quit until 10pm. But again, it's what I love about it. The ebb and flow. Could anyone in corporate America do business this way. Today, I'm back a little early, dressed down to shorts and T-shirt working from home. Love it! I'll never do anything else. Network marketing is where I am and where my future is.
  • Wow! 1 out of 100 renew their real estate license after their first year in Illinois. I know the numbers are a little better in a few other states but I suspect not one exceeds 5 out of 100. Imagine the turnover!

The Network Marketing Profession is much like real estate. Both are looking for people who are looking... to either buy or sell a house or property or to find a way to financial independence. If someone isn't looking ... next. Often I wish it were not so. [I still may have too much emotional involvement in the answer?!] The other interesting point for me is Todd's sponsor asked someone who said yes, who had demonstrated a certain skill set and level of determination in his life already. How many people are really interested in being part of the top 5% and willing to do what ever it takes for them to get there? [only 5%]

    QOTD 100+
  • This has to be the best interview yet....

Even though I've said that about the Randy Gage interview...these just get
    better & better.
My desire level, to be honest with myself, right now,
    would be 80

I AM taking charge of MY destiny
I AM soaking in ALL of this advice
I AM loving NETWORK MARKETING PRO

Excellent interview. Todd had a great sponsor, but he also had a burning desire and was coachable.

With making over $400K/yr can Todd share what was his "Burning" desire to look at other business options? Was it more time with family, lifestyle?

    Thanks,
    John

Very good, very true. Distributors' behavior has given the industry a poor name. What you're doing, Eric, will change all that.

QOTD: Desire for success - I started off with 100% when I had nothing - I felt I could reach the sky. Today I have almost everything I want, though I must work hard for it and have very little free quality time. So today my desire is mental and not emotional. I simply know that the alternative of "changing time for money" would get me to the poorhouse in later life - if I were not living in the Netherlands.
  • Great training! It's interesting that 90% of businesses fail in the first five years, but people don't judge them. According to Todd, 90% of realtors don't renew after their first year, even after investing time and money to get setup.

But network marketing gets a bad rap because 90% of people don't succeed. It looks like the numbers are pretty consistent in all business ventures, which points to one thing, the people who fail don't have a burning desire to succeed and they don't persist long enough to learn and grow to achieve success.

Great interview with Todd Smith. It's clear that people do not succeed (with anything!) when they quit before they succeed! And that burning desire to build and succeed (in NWM or anywhere else) is as necessary as breathing is for living.

Thank you so much again and kind regards
    Stella
  • Great stuff...Todd has some fascinating ideas about the profession. He is very correct about getting people off to a fast start that is critical in our business. Perhaps that would be a great segment for another show?? What are some thoughts everyone has on getting their new people into action? We like to do a series of grand openings similar to what Todd described helping people launch their business in their first few days.
  • Great first Interview with Todd Smith, loved his comments about changing the perception of our profession. The stats re the fallout from the real estate profession are quite staggering and this is a message that needs to be conveyed to the world at large as part of the re-branding process.

Looking forward to the next segment.

    QOTD: 100

    Warm regards
