NMPRO #79 – Do You Have to be a Peddler to Succeed in MLM?

June 17th, 2009 Email This

Hurry hurry!  Step right up and buy some crap!  That’s what many people believe about Network Marketing… that you have to constantly “Peddle” products to people who don’t really want them.  Not true.  Here are some of my thoughts.  Question of the Day (QOTD):  What was your favorite after school snack as a kid?

No, you do not have to. You might want to. It depends on both what you are marketing, and what your situation and personality is. Network marketing is set up so that it can accomodate many ways of marketing. I like to describe it as a trailer truck. It is a means of delivering a product.

So simple. This is perfect. Great insight Eric.

This was a great show :)

I really appericate how you can take a subject that has been so misunderstood and in less than 6 minutes put it in plain terms as to what NWM is. This is a great clip to show anyone in your life that has a question about the business. Thanks!

Also each episode just keeps getting better. I really enjoyed the Q and A ones. It was very good stuff, super excited about #100!

    QOTD: grilled cheese and salad

    QOTD: peanutbutter cookies with milk

Thanks Erick for all the couching

Thanks Eric for putting things straight. This needs to get out to the public. We love our company's products and share this with enthusiasm. I personally hate sales. This is not a sales business. It's for people's people: teachers, coaches, councellors.

So thanks for bringing up this subject.
  • There is a sigh of relief when I explain to my distributors that they only need a handful of customers... Just Get 10. Those customers come from people that have noticed the positive results that you personally have experienced from being a product of the product and from the people that were not interested in building a business. When I started implementing Randy Gage's success philosophy, my business was transformed. We are not peddlers, we are professionals.

QOTD: A Scooterpie and something to drink ....
Then when I wasnt' afraid to cross the 2 lane / mainstreet on my bike, to get to the little strip of stores - Pizza Place / Deli / Drugstore ( only 3 stores close by ) I'd get a slice with a coke with my best friend Joanie, rush home on oue bikes before 5pm to sit down at the table for dinner with the parents and my sister. Never telling about the Pizza !
Wow Eric - I haven't thought about that in a long time ! Good times growing up on Long Island, NY.

    Another enjoyable presentation
Thanks for all you do !
    hugs
    Chris
  • The important point folks: "I connect consumers with the company that can provide that product or service".

That statement alone will revolutionize your business.

So stop selling and start telling.

So many people are looking for bargain equivalents, or in the pharma world the generic version of the Brand Name. Eric uses phrase "quality product" which has psychological differentiation because people already know they would rather buy the Brand name if price were either not an object or it was on sale near the price of the generic. Network Marketing products are typically far superior but few people know it. The network marketing pro is an advocate of absolute quality.

QQTD. Slicing an inch thick piece of fresh bread,my favourite being the crust, and spreading a huge smattering of MARMITE on it. Absolutely delicious.

I like this post. There are many people who disregard this as a true profession. You pointed out that we don't 'peddle". We are professionals who offer needed service/products that clients need and value. We wear one watch at a time and don't talk from the corners of our mouths.

About the snack; mine was good ole p,b &j. That and a glass of ice cold milk would put me on cloud nine.
  • I think in network marketing we are in the sorting business not chasing business. I think if someone is only interested in getting a bunch of customers, than they would have to be selling their products daily. How they go about that, is completely up to them, but honestly most every product I have ever purchased in MLM has been from someone I know - as you just explained. I personally only lead with the opportunity nowadays, as I spent 8 months in my previous company leading with the product and not one person ever became a business builder.
  • Troy Tanga
Great qoutes Eric. We need to spread the good news of what network marketing really is. thanks for taking the time to share. Aloha
  • Cathleen
QOTD: You will absolutely think this is strange or weird . . . guaranteed!

When I was 13 years old in 1963, my junior high school would sell cucumber-sized dill pickles for 10 cents each to students on their way off campus and onto the school bus. Now . . . I like dill pickles and looked very much toward purchasing one of those pickles to enjoy on my bus ride home from school. What a treat!
  • Great message - and SO many people hear the works "network marketing" and immediately thinking of selling crap that no one wants

Great topic - but I guess you knew that already
  • Well, NOBODY really thinks of themselves as a peddler. I even actually sell my book on the streets "Get your copy right here, folks", and I consider myself an author!

What would you say to someone who says that you peddle the opportunity?
  • If the product is good, is time to join, and never before. Joining just for money in NM is never a good choice.

QOTD: Bolas de Berlim e Pasteis de nata.

    Love you all

This is a great message that I am definitely sending out to some of my friends who have said they are either terrible sales people or they don't believe in network marketing. You have described the industry in a succinct and logical fashion. Thanks, Eric. My favorite snack was Oreo Cookies though my mom was really pushing the apple on me. She never won that battle!!
  • That's why this site is not called "Network Marketing Peddler". It's not peddling that sets you apart as a professional. Great message Eric.
QOTD: Homemade cookies (chocolate chip or peanut butter)
  • Eric
QOTD: Believe it or not: an Aero chocolate bar, that's it! And no, I'm not overweight today.

An observation about peddling: maybe it's because I'm an MLM'er, but I'm told I give in too easy to those peddlers that hound us on the beaches and in the open-air markets. But at the same time, I'm an aggressive bargainer and negotiator!
  • QOTD: homemade Special 'K' bars.

I would never thrive as a peddler. I see 'carnival barkers' in the street and I am impressed with their tenacity. I will figure out how to use it or copy it working smarter.
  • Moises Benaim
My favor was, and still is, Fresh Bread with Nutella.......Or any chocolate....
  • billrogers
Great way to explain our profession!
    many Thanks!
    QOTD
    Ice Cream Sodas
  • "To peddle or not to peddle that is the question" (sorry Mr Shakespeare) the answer is of course PLEASE do not on any count peddle it will truly get you nowhere FAST. Eric said to take a walk down Canal Street in Manhattan to experience peddling, if you do not live around there try the Web version Twitter.com it is peddling at it's greatest. lol...

QOTD: Did not have a after school snack but for a treat every now and then my Mother would buy us kids a Curly Wurly yummy!!!
  • Pedro Lugo Hernández

Talk about search and you shall find... I was looking for an answer to a question from a prospect regarding this subject and you have put it so well. Thanks Eric
