NMPRO #93 Become KNOWN For Something

July 8th, 2009 Email This

A great question for you… “If you could go back in time and talk to a younger version of yourself, knowing what you know now, what advice would you give yourself?”  Today I start a 7-part series where I do that to myself and give YOU the answers.  I hope you enjoy it.  Question of the Day (QOTD):  What would you MOST like to be known for in the Network Marketing Profession?

Great video Eric. Diving deep then soaring to the stars. I'd tell myself to pick a skill, dive into it and blaze a trail. :)

I want to be known in the profession for being a hard working and honest leader who always challenged his team of leaders to be better tomorrow than they were today as they move forward each day of their lives.

As far as sales training goes, I have been working with Eric Lofholm for several years. One of the things he trains us on is sales scripting. I was one of the ones who felt that scripting was artificial. I have learned that that is not the case. I suspect that becoming great in sales scripting or scripting in general would be a good way to go.
  • Alfie
I will copy your advice to your younger self Eric, pick one skill, dive deep, and become known for it.

I recommend reading "The Five Secrets You Must Know Before You Die" by Dr. John Izzo.
  • Erik
One of the Great in our Industry is saying that Inviting is the most important skill, if you can invite you can allways put that prospect infront of a great presenter ( DVD, Internet, live or a meeting and so on ) So if to pick a skill I will say inviting as my first skill to learn :) But when my younger verson mastered that I would improve my presentation skills so I can be a big leader, not just a person that brings people to others.

" He`s a Diamont Cutter, he can show you how to be a superstar in this business if you are willing to spend your time and are willing to work hard " I would like to be known as a person that really can transform the lifes of others. So I need to work on my presenting skills, I do get nervous on the stage. Do you have a tips on how to get better on that ? I have my first ever meeting by my self ( Not together with other Distributors in other lines )
in January and needs to do a good job on the stage in January :)

QOTD: Be a top-speaker on international stages
  • By the way, I love that shirt!! What is the label, or is that confidential?
  • That's great advice Eric. I love that concept of becoming KNOWN for something.
We all have one or two things we're good at, so to develop one particular skill is an excellent way to become successful. Often we think we have to be good at EVERYTHING, which only leads to frustration.

QOTD: I'd like to be known as the person who really inspires and motivates his team - the guy who who takes the time to help each new member.
  • REALLY right on the spot!!! I'm trying to become the best leader I possibly can - for me leadership is something that I feel I have a talent for and at the same time something that I feel is one of the most important skills in the business - especially if you are moving for residual income.

  • I want to master the skill to DIVE DEEP the meaning of the words I use
Read "Morals for the 21st century" by JOHN BAINES
  • Hello Eric, love the finals words...DIVE DEEP.
I want to master the skill to DIVE DEEP the meaning of the words I use
Dario Salas Sommer has been from 25 years my mentor in that
He wrote the book, "Morals for the 21st century" (He also use the name JOHN BAINES)
He talk about the implicit order of Nature, and how Nature works and interact with us.
That book and many others he has wrote are fundamental part of my self development library
    Brings quality value to life
Thanks Eric again, you're show is incredible

I would like to be known for my ability to build a culture (in my organization) of relaxed atmosphere with honesty and warm feelings towards each other, where everybody can enjoy working with each other!
  • You are a great leader Eric. You are doing a fantastic JOB educating people on the Newtork Marketing Profession.
  • I would advise a younger version of myself to go for "independence" rather than "security" and "stability" as I had been taught. It took me years to realize that I really wanted and needed that kind of paradigm shift.
@ericworre As a network marketing professional I most want to be known as a leader and motivator, inspiring people to go beyond their own limiting beliefs, to achieve remarkable results. The first step was overcoming my own limiting beliefs - a work in progress - which has greatly accelerated since I discovered professional network marketing.
  • Hi Eric,

Great topic. I would like to be known for helping the most people get what they wanted out of their Network Marketing business.
  • Pick a skill!!! I liked it! a lot!

Eric, this is getting better every time.

To my youngest version I would have told:

    GET INTO NETWORK MARKTING, ALFREDO!

Oh, I really whish I had know this profession sooner...

Oh, well. I guess I have to accept what life had to give until now.

But, believe me: I am going to catch up, real quick!

See you all in Amsterdam tomorrow? :)

    Love you all

Advise to give myself then... I have two. 1. Change your major to business from government. 2. Do not get married yet! Seriously though I think it would have to be that when you get so mad at the upline in the 1980's do not quit!
I am having to reinvent myself from the bottom up now because I lost my sense of self confidence. Now I am just stupid happy about how I think of myself.

    Hey Eric,

If you could give me your feedback and thoughts, i would greatly appreciate it. You know what i want to be known for, the guy who picked the right company from day one and built a legacy position with that one company that outlasts my days here. Not to beat up on the point, but one of things that really bothers me about the internet guru's is they put no emphasis on picking companies, but on building your own list so you have a constant stream of prospects no matter what happens with a company. I heard Jonathan Budd the other day say that the company is irrelevant, its about you and the list you can build. Well, if you're constantly picking companies that go out of business, eventually, you're list won't want anything to do with you and you are constantly starting over with new people. That's not residual income, that's not freedom, and that's not building equity. In my opinion, none of these internet guru's or attraction marketers are in companies that are going to allow them to create legacy positions, which is true residual income. I'm talking about legacy positions with companies like Amway, Nuskin, Herbalife, Forever Living, Melaleuca, Usana, Prepaid, Oxyfresh, and a few other companies about 5 years old that show the same potential. Companies that have been around for 20+ years and will be around for another 20+ years with steady growth and excellent, affordable products. My thoughts are if you can pick a company that is going to be like one these companies, and you learn the skills, you can create legacy positions. All there is in MLM is talk about residual income, but 99.9% of people who enter mlm never get residual income even if they have the skills to build because they pick companies that don't last much longer than 3 years, or they pick companies that never do much of anything and fizzle out. Everyone is different, but for me, I started MLM six months ago so that i can build something once, and be free. I want my brand to be the guy who knew how to pick a company and stick with it to create a legacy position. I've looked at most of these internet marketers, and i respect what they do and how much they make selling e-zines and online programs, but in my opinion, I dont believe they are with companies that allow you to create walk away legacy positions. If you want to sell programs, and attraction marketing letters, etc, thats great, but if you're wanting to create true legacy positions in companies and create honest walk away income, i believe the only way to do it is to follow the teachings of people like you, Mark Yarnell, Nathan Ricks, Todd Smith, etc. I believe the most important thing in mlm along with building your skills/self is picking a company that's truly going to allow you to create what you want to create and then sticking with it with blinders on. Otherwise, you will constantly be starting over and needing a new company, etc. Sorry to rant, i just feel that the most important thing other than developing yourself and skills is picking a company that's going to allow you to create something special. I dont see ANY online guru talking about that at all. thanks!

    Hi Eric

Love the episodes, I just wanted to let you know on who i would like you to interview:

Art Neopolitano and George Zalucki - ACN
    Andre Maronian - 5 Linx
    Barry Donalson - 5 Linx
    Todd Falcone
    Alan Lorenz - Herbalife
    Debbie Davis - ACN

    Just to name a few.
  • This was interesting, as I thought about this before I watched the video. I originally thought that if I could go back in time to give myself advice, it would be a lot more of a spiritual advice, and give myself a bigger-world view. In general, I would tell myself to learn from my OWN experience rather than take so many people's word for it. I find that my experience often does NOT match up with other people's. Especially in MLM.

Now that we're talking about "picking a skill" and focusing, I'm not sure that I would do that. In some ways, I would love to know what would have happened had I gone to the performing arts school instead of a science school, since now I'm an actor. Would I be known for my performing abilities?

But one of the things I like about myself is the "Jack of all trades" thing. I like being able to talk to many people about a great many things and be part of the "in" crowd about it.

"Fail Faster" would be my advice.
  • ericworre
    Bones,

Yeah I hear you on the non-mlm stuff. I would too and I'll share some of those thoughts in some future shows. Today's was focused on mlm advice to my earlier self. Hmmm, learning from my own experience would have been okay but it would have been much slower than learning from people who've gone before me. Not to blindly follow other people's "word for it", but to actually watch what they do. That really helped me. In any case, I think you're a super cool dude.
  • pd4freeDOTcom
Eric, such a cool site. Getting caught up on all the episodes. Heard about it a little late. :) Thanks. AMAZING STUFF!
  • ericworre
And I MISS YOU dude! Say hi to your brothers for me. :)
  • ericworre
Never too late my friend. It's an endless process. :)
  • Nice shirt, @Ericworre
my advice to a younger self: study Victor Frankel and practice his teachings religiously.

QOTD: I would like to known as an impeccably honest, reliable and passionate professional network marketer, and to be recognized as substantially contributing to raising the ethical standards of our profession worldwide.
  • ericworre
Jack, for branding purposes you need something more specific. You can have a brand of being "a stand up guy", but you need to be known for a specific skill to set yourself apart (if that's what you want).
  • Thanks, Eric.
I appreciate that. And I "hear" you.
Actually, I have chosen the skill that I want to be known for, and it's a sub-set of what I originally wrote: To teach and promote presence, listening and communication as the foundation for relationship-based [network] marketing.
  • pd4freeDOTcom
By the way Jack, LOVED Victor Frankl's book. If you are interested in a story of triumph similar to Victors that really makes his experience pail in caparison (if you can imagine), read/listen to:

Victor Herman's book, "Coming Out of the Ice."

    WOW.

Eric, have you ever read that book? Anyone else?? Thoughts???
  • Eric, you are always have something what I need to hear. It makes me happier :-D
QOTD: I'm newly on board , only 5 months in NM profession. I'm reading books, feeding my brain with a lot of information and my problem is I'm jumping from one to another to quickly. I know I have to focus on one thing, that's what now I'm trying to fix. So my advise to myself would be - to focus one one book or course and go deep into that and apply what you have learned.
  • That is good advice.
Ask your upline to suggest what that one thing should be and discuss it with her.
If it doesn't make sense to you, find an upline that you can connect with.
  • The answer she gave me is this: grab a sponsor and work on statistic. :)
  • I'm loving these one on one series you're doing here. Interviews are great but these are the best.
QOTD: I want to be known as a master trainer and speaker.. Using the teaching skills and help others to realize their dreams.
  • ericworre
So what's your plan to become a master trainer & speaker? What's your first step?
  • I think to completely answer your question Eric, I have to promote the Company i work with. but I'll try not to here.
I think I've taken 4 steps so far. I know I have a LONG way to go to become the even close to a master of either of those skills.

    1. I joined a great NM marketing company with several effective and outstanding leaders with many of the skills I want to master. Some have the entire package. Others have mastered a few of the skills I want to learn. i never miss a major event in part because I don't want to miss the next big (or little) nugget that will make a difference.

    2. My educational training (teaching degree) gives me a heads up The training involved to become a teacher is overwhelming at times.

3- I joined a professional group called Toastmasters in my early 20's and learned how to become a more effective communicator

4- I have been presenting at my local business briefing on a regular basis to practice and sharpen my skills

I believe my next step is to create a strong team within my NM company and Become Known For Something.

I really like the culture aspect due to it's all involving and is a teaching of a habit rather than a skill.

    After all, success speaks volumes

By the way.... there are very few of us who can pull of wearing a shirt like that! I LOVE YA DUDE!!!
  • Don't pay attention, Eric. He's just jealous.
  • pd4freeDOTcom
Jack (& Eric) I am LOVVVVVVVVVING the shirt!!! No hate here! :) My point was... there are not a lot of US who can pull off wearing digs like that! That is a compliment. :) I think. Much love my man.

  • ericworre
So what's your plan to be known as a personal development teacher? What's your first step?
  • pd4freeDOTcom

Become a best seller of both
Continue building my Personal Development Blog (http://www.pd4free.com), and building the list. :)

  • I like Scott Cofer's sponsor up advice. Becoming a master at teaching how to do it sounds like a great next area of study. How far up may I breakthrough using the law of association? I was a master recruiter for the USN in the early 80's and the essence was I only offered the opportunity to those qualified to take it. The emphasis was insuring they had all their ducks lined up before they were asked to say yes. Once that was true my close rate was over 97%. I am sure anyone’s would be. Filling the funnel with qualified potential super stars is priority one. Showing others how to do it is next.

QOTD: Mentoring the most millionaires ever. 100 is the first goal.
  • ericworre
So before you can mentor millionaires, you have to become one. What's your plan to become a millionaire? What's your first step?
  • Advice - Don't eat that!

    QOTD - helping others succeed
  • Awesome advice Eric! It's funny that you posted this because I just finish reading "Know Can Do" and they talk about one of the biggest reasons why people don't do what they know is because they suffer from information overload. They go through a lot of information but they don't go deep like you say in this video.

QOTD - I want to be known as the best trainer in the industry.
  • ericworre
So what's your plan to become the best trainer in the industry? Suggestion, pick one talk and make it world class. Then tell it to as many people who will listen. Become "Known" for that talk. Good first step.
  • Thanks for the advice Eric. I have decided that the one talk that I am going to work on is "Recruiting With Posture." I believe that too many people struggle in this industry because they have a weak posture and wonder why no one wants to join with them. So I will develop a talk on posture and tell it to as many people as possible. Thanks again Eric, you gave me some world class advice right there!
  • QOTD: Creating Leaders
  • ericworre
So what's your plan to become known for creating leaders? Specifically
  • Follow and be coached by my sponsor, follow You, Randy and other known true leaders

Unfortunatelly I can't participating in Amsterdam, the MasterMind Event, but will be participating at the Stockholm meeting with Randy.
  • Participating in events and learn how other true leaders teach leadership.
  • Great idea for a series, Eric. And by the way -- KILLER shirt! :-)

My advice to a younger 'me' would be .... prepare yourself to sponsor 'up' and sponsor enough people (40-50 minimum) to find your 'Key 5'. My results early on were lackluster because I did not sponsor enough 'quality' people personally. And of course, my group did the same thing....

    QOTD: Leadership ...

    Best to you,
    Scott
  • ericworre
So you want to be know for your leadership abilities? What's your plan to make that happen? What's your first step?
  • Well, I've already taken the first step(s) by creating a complete 'soup-to-nuts' training site and system for my team, which saves everyone a lot of time and effort re: training our new team members. Also, about a month ago we started a weekly 'Leader's Meeting' on Wednesday nights for our local group -- keeps us in touch, we share ideas, and hold each other accountable. Also, I have shifted my focus with regards to personal development to reading leadership-related material within the industry - Dillard has some great stuff, as does Gage and Jordan Adler. Any suggestions, Eric?
