NMPRO #108 – Great Expectations

July 29th, 2009 Email This

This is one of the most important topics to date.  Afraid to talk to friends & family about your product or opportunity?  This can help.  Forward this to your organization and watch them grow.  Question of the Day (QOTD):  What is your biggest challenge in building your network marketing business?

Eric - thanks again for being honest and keeping it real. Awesome stuff. Looking forward to seeing the world with you someday soon.
  • aliceflanders
I definitely would like to see the world. I would like at least to see this country. Speaking of setting expectations, One of the things I tell people is that they have to work to make some money. Too many people think that they can sit on the couch and collect the money that falls out of the ceiling fan.
  • Erik
My biggest problem is to pick up the phone. When I called one or two persons then there is no problem and I can the next and the next . . . But I have a problem to get started. Im doing it every day but I need to remind myself why Im doing this everyday :)
  • Hey Eric,
Thanks for showing me downtown Sydney...I can't wait to go there...it is one of my kick the bucket wish list items!!! Better sooner than later and, great advice in this segment. There are a lot of folks who hype NW marketing as a quick trip to the bank and long term income for life...yes that can happen with a lot of WORK!!!
I own my own business...its cool! And I have to work at it everyday and learn and grow...thanks to you that is happening!
  • Love Sydney! Have been there more than a few times. Australia has become my 2nd home, spent all of 2008 living down under.
  • ritafulton
Thank you. Now I just have to go back and recoup damages from not knowing what I was doing. I certainly am proud of, believe in and have experienced my product; unfortunately, some "duplication" can be manifested the wrong way. I am now sponsor "less" and in my attempt to learn a better and more professional way to present my opportunity, I discovered Network Marketing professionals such as yourselve. I have grown tremendously. Hopefully, that will be noticed by those close to me now. Thanks for yur tremendous wealth in moving the profession up notches.
  • Eric, absolutly right, phalse expectatives are the worst thing we can do. After listening this, I understood that the key is to give real expectatives, like any other business.
Very good class, thanks again, we are learning a lot.

  • Great advise and great to see you in Australia. Hope to be there very soon proudly developing the biggest organization "Down Under"
Always the Best to you Eric

Ahhh, great advise. Thanks Mr. Worre

  • Forgot the QOTD: Biggest challenge? There are many, however watching this show each day certainly has put a lot of the hurdles back where they came from. As Randy Gage says: They're illusions, they don't actually exist.
  • One thing that can help people get over the family and friends prospecting hurdle is the use of 3rd party tools (it was taught to me by none other than the incomparable Mr Eric Worre).
That way it's not up to you to tell them all about your opportunity, a tool (DVD, website, 3-way phone call with another leader) tells the story.
Secondly this process completely removes the problem of expectation and/or outcome. Meaning that if the family member or prospect doesn't like what they see then it's the tool they don't like, not you.
The feeling of 'what if they think I'm stupid' was a BIG issue for me in the beginning and I know that it's a big issue for many. Once I started using the tools and then getting out of the way I could finally say to my people "If I don't show you this DVD (or website or whatever you have) I will be depriving you of the most important information you will ever see in your life, if I give you this DVD will you watch it". Then get out the way and it becomes entirely their decision.
PS: Eric, next time you come to Sydney, providing you have time, I will take you on the Sydney Harbour bridge climb. Actually, make time for it. You will never experience anything else like it.
  • Tony >>>Once I started using the tools and then getting out of the way I could finally say to my people "If I don't show you this DVD (or website or whatever you have) I will be depriving you of the most important information you will ever see in your life, if I give you this DVD will you watch it". Then get out the way and it becomes entirely their decision.<<<

How many times have you said that to your family????????????????????????? Please!!!

I don't know about people in Australia, but that dog won't hunt in America!

Maybe if this is their first business opportunity and their very first family approach.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, population of 7 million every MLM is represented and has been well over 50 years! Taking that into account how many people know nothing about MLM, Network Marketing, pyramid or ponzi schemes? Not many, unless they don't speak the language or are just to young. Heck my daughter has grown up with me and my programs.

The best way to approach family and friends is to SHARE the products or services and get feedback. You can use the "Name, I know you're not interested, but can you please try out this product or service and give my some feedback."

Have no expectations at all. See what develops. After that fails with family & friends what's next????? Even if it works out well and every one joined. Getting them to duplicate you is another matter. Getting them to a meeting after a long day and drive at the office is another matter.

What's needed are marketing systems (new school) where we can throw money at them to "attract" interested parties and place them.

There is one company I know that runs radio ads in the Bay Area. If I remember right it costs around $1,000 per month to be a part of that program.

That's sounds like a lot. But if they have charts to show their results now it's just a business decision. Your out come in terms of earnings should be predictable. The way we currently do business, it's a crap shot at best.

Sorry to be so blunt. I know you're a big boy and can handle it.

    Paul
  • Hi Paul,
Thanks for your comments. I understand your position and respect your openness.
Australians aren't any different as we have all been 'bashed' with over the top MLMers over the years however I used that direct approach with my brother and cousins and a bunch of other prospects, with a calm yet precise and focused tone of voice, not a loud obnoxious approach. Nearly all of them looked. Some liked it, some didn't.
I guess in the end it's a matter of posture. In my opinion to open with 'I know you're not interested' places no importance on the opportunity however if that works for you then so be it.
As far as duplication goes, one has to find their own way of opening the eyes of the prospect to look and so long as one keeps learning through continually doing then all will work out in the end.
    Regards and thanks again Paul.
    Tony Scarcia.
PS: Keep throwing money at them and let me know in 90 days what results you get.
That's not meant to be a 'smart' question, I really want to see your results.
    thanks.

I fully agree that setting the right expectation with family members coming into the network marketing with us is important. Especially when we are new or not having achieve enough success yet in this profession. On the other hand, when this biz is done right, the rewards and the bonding among family members, which I have seen in some very successful network marketing professional families, is immensely great. I am always very inspired ny such families. Eric, I love your particular sharing of this point in this video.
  • cwhelan
Speaking with family and friends is a challenge when I get caught up in wanting to take responsibility for their success. The thought of Something we can do together - and share a lifestyle that we dream of gets everyone excited, but sometimes they just don't get it , or just don't want to commit to the work it will take. You said it perfectly. Eric .

QOTD: As you mentioned , "expectations" ... for me, it's always been a battle between wanting to build a Network Marketing business to prove my negative friends or family members wrong when they "expected" me / or the opportunity to fail, AND for me to get out of my own way - and stop worrying about the NO's and find the YES's and not get caught up on how long it might take . I also recently discovered that I have been stagnant - almost frozen in my own tracks - for fear of actual success in my Network Marketing business. Crazy but True !

Thanks for letting me see it in writing , Eric ... Wow - I've got to get busy and refocus.
    Hugs
    Chris
  • QOTD: I'm still to lazy and my English is not good as it should be.
  • 1) Credible company, Proud of your company
    2) False expectations

    It's a business , its not a lottery.

The easiest way to talk about your program is to SHARE your product. If it cannot be readily shared, find
another way to share your message.

THINK and you can grow your business. Get and read THINK & GROW RICH.

    I hope this helps.

that s a great one Eric. It is so true.
  • Steve
    Solid Eric.
biggest challenge - at the core, it's holding to the Vision w/faith. (then all else necessary will follow)
  • Interacting with family is difficult especially if you remain emotionally attached to past issues. The ability to have the same posture with family as you have with strangers has always been of interest to me. When I sold insurance I discovered a lot about friends and families beliefs and prejudices. Each one is a potential lead source and some will give you names for no reason while others are more inclined with a small gratuity. If you know their favorite restaurant a gift certificate will do wonders. "What's in it for me." is always somewhere in the background. Your relationship with your warm market is a dance you have been in since you were born. Enjoying the dance with your new business and sharing it with family and friends is much like bringing a new date to the party.

Your "Expectation" IS the source of all your upsets, anger, disappointment, aggravation and agitation. We carry a 'rule' book with us we have never investigated thoroughly and much of it is not of our design or make up. We accepted ideas and notions along the way that perhaps worked once but now are just daily annoying upsets. The next time any agitation appears look at the 'rule' you have that was just violated. Many of them are themes of 'This shouldn't happen to me.' or something similar. Rarely will you discover a commitment of yours has been broached. If that is true instead of getting mad you can share your commitment in the matter and discover if anyone in your world shares it. You can change all the rules you have that make you angry and unhappy. You may want to disappear many of them as useless and just plain annoying because they were written by you age two.

Setting people up with unreasonable expectations will be less likely after you began to notice your own. Some need to be broken into smaller chunks, workable tasks that create a sense of accomplishment and 'juice' for the day. Others you will need more information, training or a coach to assist you in the realization once the expectations become workable goals.

QOTD: The gap, the gestation period, between planting the seed and its breaking ground is easy planting tomato seeds. Seeds of opportunity have something to do with how close people are already to being ready. [12 o'clock] Once growth begins the amount of watering and fertilizer is also easier with tomatoes than with people. The gap between letting things happen and assisting people are my greatest challenges. I don't trust my own expectations. The numbers suggest somewhere between 3 and 5% of who look at the business will participate when using random numbers. With some discernment you could double those numbers but half will quit regardless. How do be hot enough for the popcorn to commence popping ... and do I actually have enough real popcorn ready to pop? ...
  • Thanks, Iceburner.
I just want to repeat what I have taken from your post:

"Setting people up with unreasonable expectations will be less likely after you began to notice your own."

    Grate topic Eric
Eric my greatest challenge about family is that I tried other Network Marketing companies I did not succeed so now they just laugh at me say it is a rip off scam pyramid then I just wimp out I know that MLM works because I have followed you & other Network Marketing Pros. for over 20 years( we just had aou 11 acre farm Foreclosed & Filed Bankruptcy that didn't help) My wife will NOT even think or talk about anything to do with Network Marketing Eric it makes it very difficult to even try to be Proactive You should do a show on How To Be Successful In Network Marketing with a Negative Spouse. Eric Is there guys that have done this with a Negative Wife??? If so How did they do the business with the support & laughter???
  • My wife is also negative. I told her I was going to leave her! I'm serious. She changed some what.

Find a credible company with products that make sense to her. My wife actually tells me to order a, b & c b now.

Over the years we've had weekly and monthly checks from other companies. She would even ask did the check come? Her fear is I'm going to press her into service.

Sorry, to hear about the farm.

I watched the Medgar Evers story today. I was inspired by the actions my people took to turn around Mississippi. They used boycotts on local stores. They banned together and worked for a common good to save each other and move forward. They made HUGE sacrifices to bring about change as Medgar gave his life along with many others.

My thoughts: here we are, the nation and people like you are losing everything and we have an economic solution in network marketing. Yet many will not listen to our call. And why should they? We have a lousy track record of success. Just yesterday I visited http://mlmwatchdog.com and discoverd YTB the travel company finally settle with the state of CA. Sure enough company officials don't think they can survive with the state in Ill next in line to settle.

We MUST become smarter networkers and push out programs that aren't viable. I knew from the start it wouldn't work long term. Yet YTB exploded over the years. How much harm has now been done to the industry as a whole???? How many reps continued to recruit while in this law suit????? Where is the professionalism when we ideally stand by and say nothing while top leaders look for their next deal as a precautionary move???

Where is the leadership then???? Protecting their own checks and family incomes. This is not an isolated instance. This happens year in and year out, over and over again. I was in WCN World Class Network a travel company and the very same thing happened in 1995.

I also learned from the above website NONI was just kicked out of Brazil. What does that mean for other MLM's in that country? Or South America as a whole.

We need to be a customer of each other rather than shop at big box stores on price. Support other MLM's as a customer and weed out weak companies. The market is saturated with new companies. Another MLM Proxycomm just got scammed in Nigeria. They say it could jeopardize the whole company. That country should be looked at with suspicion.

Find a solid company and move forward, SHARE your products it's tax deductible. Be patient! Why sell or give a presentation to someone not interested in the product? Place product first then see if they're interested in learning more. There isn't one MLM that can't provide you with a rock solid income stream that would make you very happy! Do you really need $100,000 per month? How about $20,000 per month. That's equivalent to 5% per yr. on $4,800,000 in the bank.

    I hope this helps.

    Sorry
  • Enrique
    It's about skills!!!
  • In my experience, unrealistic expectations are certainly the greatest stumbling block to success.
So, I intend to leverage this episode by putting it on my blog and elsewhere.

What a shame that this simple truth is so out of harmony with all of the up-beat presentations that I have ever heard.

I find that my biggest challenge is that I did not have any business sense. I had no idea how business really runs. I am taking college business classes now so that I understand the real world behind being in business. I no longer think that I am going to get rich over nothing, and I am learning what I can do for my business that will lead me to success. I am also learning some of the sales side and that is helping a lot.

  • My biggest challenge is making more and more millionaire that I can do in this life and I'll be No.1 network marketer in the world!
  • stellawebber
QOTD:My biggest challenge is: talk more to my family and relatives about the opportunity! About the products I do talk to them, but not enough about opportunity. Mainly because of their skeptical attitude about my business. I have to show them, that they are wrong, if they think I'm not going to be successful! I know I will!
Then some of them will want to join me.
I did send a videolink to my sister, who is very skeptical about this. We will see.
Thanks for sharing the beautiful scenery of Sidney.
    Kind regards

  • Getting into NM as a lotery ticket i9s really not understanding this business and the potencial it represents to our lives.

It's a business, not like anyother. And that is the diference: Not like anyother.

You may do it as a job, but have the return as a business! You can even do it as a game. An honest one, of course.

    QOTD: ME!

    Love you all

Great nugget! Amazing! Reiterating and making us aware of the right frame of mind we should be.
    fantastic photography as well.
  • Great Content and video Eric. While I am not a huge opera fan, as a history buff. I love the architecture and the history of the places you visit. Can't wait til the day Deb and I join you in these travels. Until then, Work work work, build build build...

QOTD: Consistency and building in those moments things don't go the way I expect or want them to go.. I think when I first started it also was changing my mindset from being a employee working for a check to becoming more focused on being self employed and building a residual income. Figuring out the activity created the income or being activity driven vs. results driven. Tough concept for some people.
