My biggest pain in the butt with working out - being consistent. Working on a trainer too. Great commitment Eric. Make it happen and thank you as always.

Right now your body is looking good. Of course I realize that this picture is last September. Wish my body looked that good. Perhaps soon. I have no workout partner yet.
  • so true - it makes the journey so much more fun to have a workout partner

Consistency is exactly what I'm missing in my life .. in so many areas, Eric . I too had a workout coach - for a couple months and then due to some randomness of nature ( my best guy friend diagnosed with Cancer after buring my Aunt in Oct '08 and buring a close g'friend in Jan '09 ) It all seemed too much - I just stopped .. slowly, it decreased from 5 days a week to 3 days a week to 0 days a week. And, even though I want to improve my health and physical appearance I am not consistent with the effort / work it will take to make that improvement.
Lack of confidence or belief in my own success has been key to many of the disappointments I've had in my life. . . but you 've helped me identify that its also a lack of consistency as well.
Hmmmmm This is Huge ! I know exactly what I need to do now - thank you so much !!
    hugs

    Eric,

I am on track looking for "workout" partner. I'm a little bit "gun" shy as orphaned once already. Thanks to NW Pro I can pull up my boot straps and go again.

Thank you..finding "workout" partner that is local for face to face will be awesome.
  • Well done, Eric.

ASICS - Anima Sana in Corpore Sano.

I will chalenge you for a race on one of our next meetings... maybe in Sidney next Year, does that sounds like a Plan? :)

    Love you all

  • Great stuff Eric!!! Working together with someone that have the same goals is amazing. Best regards, your biggest fan.
  • Having and being a ‘work out partner’ has proven to me that I get more done, become more efficient, when someone is ‘holding’ my promises.

The difficult part is discovering what you CAN DO daily and weekly that you will remain true to. All too often excitement captures my attention for a period and my production level goes up but there is no way I can sustain the activity at that level forever. Then I hit the wall or some other reason like “I can do this by myself’ occurs and weeks go by. No support and the weeds creep in and pretty soon no activity is the result. THAT is usually dealt with by 'it wasn’t the right thing’ or 'I am not right for it.' Either way the non activity means more of the same OR we begin something new and at best we start over.

The challenge with doing ‘it’ every day without fail usually means nothing appears to be happening in the beginning and longer. If our muscles aren’t sore we are not working out hard enough. If I can’t lift more, do more reps this week than last that means something too. Inviting five new people each week means we will likely find one or two every 8 weeks get in the business. The ‘spin’ to watch and do is the five every week… not the one or two who get in. My knowing that doesn’t change how the one or two who get in offer a much bigger adrenaline rush than the five I invite do each week. Finding a method that works for you to remain consistent is the challenge. If the current method has never worked or is not working, do something different until it does. I suspect we need two methods for consistency to work.

Having a ‘breakthrough’ requires a level of effort to have it happen and once the breakthrough occurs we naturally slack off. The jet plane needs full throttle to get off the run way and then usually the nose is pulled up and it’s full throttle all the way to cruising altitude followed by reduced throttle to maintain altitude.. Those are two different models of consistency. One takes you to cruising altitude and the other keeps you there. All too often we attempt to cruise as soon as the wheels come off the runway and the trees get in the way.
  • I was noticing my thoughts as you were talking, and I was like "What's the big deal? Going to the gym 3 times a week is so easy..." And I'm sure that for many, many people, it's near impossible.
Similarly, I'm sure there are people who say "What's the big deal? Showing 5 new people my business every week is easy...".
I'm totally self-motivated about going to the gym, and I have the results I want. And even when I don't go for a few (as I haven't recently b/c I've had a cold), I identify myself as a gym-goer, y'know? I've been aching to get back.

I guess I could train myself to do the same in our business.

I've always been the consistent one for the gym, every person I've ever gone to the gym with has stopped going, but for me, it's no big deal. I'm going to think about it the same way from now on.

Eric .. good stuff. Sounds like you might have read The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson
  • ericworre
:) That's way funnier than you might think.
  • kathyschneider
Now why is that funny? Have you read it? Is Jeff your mentor or you his? Or what about Michael Clouse? As I watched the video today .. I could ((hear)) both of these guys talking!
  • This is an issue that concerns me a lot.
Aren't you actually talking about a coach? Like your personal trainer?
In that case, the "work-out partner" you refer to would be a cost free solution - unless you consider the barter transaction a form of payment. And yes, Accountability IS incredibly important.

The only issue I have with this is that, contrary to a workout with a personal trainer that can all be done while s/he is present, a workout partner or a coach can have a long-term effect only if the attitude we take when submitting ourselves to them is to learn how to do on our own. Otherwise, it's just another tool for coping out of the personal responsibility without which it just won't work.
See Richard Brook - MachII - his chapter on Self-Motivation.

Yes, self-motivation is good. But just about every top leader I've ever known has had a workout parter (or accountability partner) to keep them on track. Not a paid motivator, but someone they can work with to create mutual accountability.

Self-motivation is the ultimate goal, but people have been programmed to be externally motivated vs. internally motivated. Thus, my process of reprogramming myself for health & fitness.
  • I apologize if I came across as opposed to work-out partners or coaches and mentors. I'm not.

The point I was trying to make is that no amount of "external motivation" (I like that - it's politically correct for pushing or nudging) works without a tenacious commitment.

This may be trite, but, I think it works the other way around. True, we've been programmed to REACT to external motivation, but if that is all we elicit - the reaction will be begrudged, beleaguered and frustratingly ineffective in the long run.

If, on the other hand, you have the inner motivation, and realize that you need a helping hand - but that the onus is on you - taking a work-out partner/mentor/coach will elicit welcomed RESPONSES from you that will help re-program the way you want.

  • Eric I agree. I have been a gym goer for most of my life and enjoy the exercise habit but sometimes you are tired and feeling a bit ill and need someone just to get you to do a little even if it isn't what you'd do when you are 100%
Taking your other point about being the average of the 5 people you spend most of your time with - the workout partner should be a stretch for you so they can get that little bit more from you.
Whilst self-motivation is important as you acknowledge - it's great to have a buddy to pull for you when you are tired (and vice versa).
