NMPRO #154 – Stop Waiting To Get Lucky

October 8th, 2009 Email This

Most people say “I’d rather be lucky than good!”.  What a stupid way to think.  Get GOOD and everything else will take care of itself.

Develop yourself to get better everyday rather than waiting on luck. You'll get so much more out of life. Thanks Eric.

I had a big OUCH today. Talk about I better get good! I had a customer several years ago that I took an order from, then lost it and forgot about it. she called me several months later. I then messed up her order. I felt bad and was not sure how to repair the damage. I got her the order and gave it to her free. Then a couple years later she gave me another order and I messed up again. Same lady. I got it straightened out, but felt so bad that I did not contact her again. Guess what I just found out. She has signed up under someone else of course to sell my product! OUCH! Good rep, lost, all my own fault!

I love the way you say about luck, "you might be lucky to get a few dollars, but you won't be lucky to the top." Skills, skills, skills. Yes, it is all about skills. And to me, the right attitude is very important as well.
  • Erik
No luck, skills, passion and action is some of the things you need :)
  • Hi. Luck has absolutely nothing to do with success in NWM no more than being lucky makes you end up a good doctor, lawyer or whatever your career choice. Being a NWM professional is about learning, working, studying and all the other good stuff that is involved with being a professional of any kind. This is a career choice. If anyone wants to be at the top of their career choice, they have to work at it. I love what I do!!
  • Really cool view outthere in Central Park. I'm so lucky to have you as my mentor...take care my friend. Best regards from your biggest fan.
  • Amen To That!

Very true Network Marketing is work and the more work we put in the better we get a developing our skill
  • I prefer both, luck and skills. That lady that recruited Jeff Olson back in NSA and got his whole organization when he left was lucky so there are some benefits of being lucky. However, I agree with you totally, if you develop the skills you won't have to sit there and wait to get lucky, you can create your own success.
  • Unfortunately, such a common thought among new networkers. I'm already coaching my new team members to watch your site every day for personal development and continuous learning on our profession. Thanks for giving us such a great third-party tool to tell them what we know they need to hear.
  • Erik
    Yes your right Yendi :)

You certainly hit it on the head. Fate and luck are not elements of success. Daily personal development and action is key.

oh yes, we have to work our butts off. luck has no place in our business. i keep on saying to my team that this business is not for the weak of heart but for the courageous ones. john

Great explanation of luck vs. skills concept. Thank you Eric!

So many people with the lottery minded mentality are attracted to network marketing, but very few ever succeed if they even last more than a few months. Thanks for sharing!

I once heard that "Luck" is an acronym for Laboring Under Correct Knowledge (skills + hard work)

I agree with Matt, walk to camera was smooth...very 007 :)

By the way I am SO jealous that you're in NY for the ALDS...the city must be so ALIVE!...but then it always is. I <3 NY!
  • loved the walk to the camera... so cool!
  • The 'luck' required to win the lottery when used after the win insures your failure. Luck without preparation may be a curse. The experience of action, actually riding the bike or attempting until you do, produces a result that has absolutely nothing to do with luck. Luck on the other hand finds great favor with those in action. Thank you Eric for sharing.
  • "The harder you work the luckier you are" or "Luck is preparation in action"
  • ez2win
To paraphrase what Mark Hughes once said: The more you plan - the luckier you get; the more you take action - the luckier you get; the more you talk to people - the luckier you get; the harder you work - the luckier you get.

Luck comes to those who are productive, follow a plan, and take actions towards their goals, it doesn't come out of the blue!
  • Common theme: Take Charge, Develop YOURSELF, Work your face off. Make your own luck.

Thanks for what you do Eric,

  • Ahhh! Autumn in New York.....looks fabulous!
Thanks for taking me there for a couple of minutes, Eric.
Good show today. Do you notice how most unsuccessful people call successful people "lucky"?
I don't really believe in luck myself.
I believe we make our own luck, we make our own lives.
WE are the only ones responsible for our success AND our failure.
My favourite definition of luck: "Luck is what happens when preparedness meets opportunity."
  • "Luck is what happens when preparedness meets opportunity." ... Spoken like a True John Wooden Fan.

Thanks Eric again for this brilliant small video in this great environement in NY.
You are right developing skills is the key element of success and every one needs to be able to learn to duplicate and succeed and lottery dreamers should start thinking differently.
Very impatient to watch the next one.
    Enjoy the big apple
  • Love it...You cannot luck your way to the top !! Luck is a part of that scarcity mindset...that's why lottery winners usually end up being broker after winning the lottery than they were before...amp up your skill set...amp up your success ...YOU are appreciated Eric !!
  • "Stop waiting to get lucky, and get some skills"- That was my philosophy when I'd go out looking for love.

Now that I've made the most obvious joke I could, I think I do this in a lot
of areas in my life. There are things I like being half-assed about, and frankly, it's worked out
in a bunch of scenarios. But then again, there's that Shaw quote:

"The harder I work, the luckier I get"
