Technology today is certainly helping many come together all over the country and world but it isn't stopping the old school methods of getting together in person and having that face to face meetings as we continue to build solid relationships.

Hey Eric, there was a video that you did with Randy Gage that went over similar subject matter; it was great. I totally agree that it's not about old school or new school (by the way I find it funny that a lot of the online only systems, have developed DVDs to hand out and are emphasizing get togethers [meetings] and offline people are exploring online technologies). It's a blend of both. Just an observation, seems like the biggest earners with the biggest cohesive groups emphasis personal relationships. You could probably answer that better with your view as a top earner. Great video. thanks.

The new tools of technology are just that ... TOOLS! We build trust over the internet in the same way we build trust in the 3D space: by giving consistent positive interpersonal experiences and by showing people's wellbeing and concerns matter to us. Basically we should utilize the technology to provide logistical support to the building of trust, and not just to amplify an outbound message.

I'm currently writing a article for my companies newsletter on this subject and I have a thought about a previous post on Coca-cola building trust and transfering belief without hotel meetings. I personally was not introduced to my first glass of Coca Cola through a hotel meeting however I was offered a glass to drink from someone I was face to face with. They said here give this a try it's awesome and BECAUSE I had a certain amount of TRUST with that person I tried it. Coca-Cola actually started out through relationships built on a certain amount of trust face to face.

Whether belly-to-belly or on the Internet, the short cuts are killing people... and perhaps that's a good thing, because what's left are people who REALLY know the fundamentals and that this business is and always be built on Relationshipping & Partnershipping & Leadershipping.

That would be no different than the very 'old school' 3 foot rule of shaking someone's hand and pitching them on your biz. It's yuk whichever way we look at it.

I'm here to make money not to waste time with tire kickers. I agree with building trust and that a good relationship is very important but you don't pay your marketing with trust or good relationships, you pay it with cash, mula, $$$, plata, dinero, green...

MLMers say they are open minded but by being part of someone else business is just that, being part of a business you don't own. Period.

NEW SCHOOL is the inverse. YOU FIRST GIVE VALUE, MODEL A SYSTEM and THEN SOME ELSE BUSINESS. That's smart cause you make up front cash and leverage your humanity with a system that doesn't depends on people emotions and then thanks to the value you deliver through your funnel you have open minds and serious individuals to talk about "your" mlm biz.

This is funny because you are building trust and transfering belief with videos just right now... If not, why are you making videos instead of doing a home meeting in your brother new neighbors house?

And even more interesting in previous videos you interviewed Gary Vaynerchuk author of crush it... a 100% NEW SCHOOL material...

Conclusions:
Don't fight it. I agree that people connect with people and even mike dillard wrote black belt recluting, so we must dominate the phone, but that will be in the back end of your funnel and with cash in your pocket and peace of mind to talk relax and not giving a desperate impression.

Old SCHOOL will never give you the real opportunity to BUILD YOUR OWN LEGAL BUSINESS.

I prefer the new school first, then some old schools skills, but that is just me a nintendo generation guy... :P

BUT, that value can have an inverse value, when you do it by the wrong reasons, selfishness reasons, win-loss reasons, I mean relationships with poor ethic quality.

Many people say are MLMs but they dont know the diference between selling and marketing. Not only they don't know the information, thay don't have idea about the deep meaning of the words they use.

The people that really love the result of everyone in their donwlines are the people who really take the time to learn new stuff and help everyone the most they can.

New school is not convenience to traditional mlm companies cause their brand became secondarily but they love the result new schoolers bring to their business. If we speak about selfishness... Results (making money) are everyone reason at the end of the day. If not, then we should join a non profit organization, which by the way the run with money.

Hey Eric - I have been in network marketing since 1992 and have done all the typical "old school" techniques. I joined my primary company after taking a couple years off to work the corporate side of MLM. I started in March of 2007 and have primarily built the business using organic SEO which I rank very high on Google for my chosen keywords. I also do Blogs, article, Social Media, and other things.

Over the 2 1/2 years I have been with my new company I have personally sponsored over 150 distributors (91 so far this year), primarily online, and have built an organization of about a little over 4,500 distributors, and a very nice income.

You are right about the relationship side of things. It takes a lot more effort and time to build the relationship online, and they tend to quit a lot quicker too. I am finding for two main reasons:

1) Until I actually meet them face to face, it's a lot easier to walk away, or never answer the phone, because they know they will never see me since most of the people I sponsor are not near where I live.

2) You don't have the duplication that you have when you build "old school." A lot of people love the idea and concept of marketing online, but simply don't have the skill, knowledge or patience to learn it. So they give it a "try," don't get the Porsche the first month and quit.

3) And the top reason, is that typically when a person is searching the Internet for a MLM, they first find the company they want to join, then they do a search looking for top income earners and leaders within the company, NOT the new guy who just got started. This is how people find me. I know this is one of the main reasons MLM 2.0 will be difficult for the new distributor because I have taught some of my SEO strategies to distributors on my team who rank pretty close to me for many keywords, but they don't get near the conversion I get.

Here is another case in point. I met with a crossline Coach to me who built his business using warm market, 3-foot rule, and local meetings. When I met with him, he had about 70 personally sponsored Coaches and I had just broke 100. His organization was just over 7,000 distributors strong and mine was about 3,500 strong at the time. He had double the organization with about 30% less personally sponsored Coaches.

Anyway, I think MLM 2.0 works, and doing a blend of the two will be what works best in the future. Many of my distributors are now close friends - especially when we meet at events and really start bonding. We are starting to implement more of the "old school" strategies into our business now.

Thanks Eric, For me MLM 2.0 are no more that just tools to help to connect with others, just like the telephone, or meeting at a party and then the real relationship building begins. I think it will force people to be more transparent and authentic since anything they do "online" will be for every achieved and searchable by the search engines. Unfortunately a lot of people do not seem to realize that at this time.

Eric, I know so many big income earners in network marketing who do not have their own website (apart from team sites for internal info/training purposes), are nowhere to be seen on Facebook, Twitter or any other social media platform and yes, a lot of them use technology but the core relationship building is person to person, face to face.
Let me just clarify that I do mean network marketing, not direct selling or internet marketing, attraction marketing, ppc, lead generation etc. (There are so many people that don't know the difference between these mediums yet put them all in the same bucket and that's just sheer ignorance or a misleading tactic).

Recently a guest was sent to one of our hotel meetings from a person in another country. The guest had seen an online video yet commented after the meeting that they were blown away by how we were committed to helping each other from across the globe. They have also said that although the video told the story, it was meeting the people that helped them decide to get started in our company, (sponsored by the overseas team member of course). So yes, this IS a personal business and yes, relationships can be developed from an initial on-line exposure but I bet, and I have no back-up for this, that more people reach a greater level of success by utilising a combination of old and new than by just the new way itself. (That old/new terminology really sucks by the way).
As you know Eric the real issue is whether or not a whole process regardless of new or old can be duplicated by the majority of people regardless of education, skill or any other factor for that matter.

SEO is like "Highlander", the movie: "There can only be one" ... in this case, at the top or the complete first page of the SERP (search result page in searchengines like google)

My only caveat is to watch the language nuances. I see a lot of the people selling leads and pay-per-click courses trying to position everything else as "old school" as though what they are offering is "new school" and by inference, better.

People have been trying to downplay working with your warm market, having meetings or talking to people by positioning it as old school. But the fact is, these are foundational elements of duplication and building a long term business.

I am feeling that MLM is going to reach the tipping point in the years to come, so people outside MLM industry will respect our industry, cause they will understand the difference in doing something with a non etical approach or with a ethical marketing, atracting approach.

There are a lot of people out there who offering their advice on new school marketing tactics but I think many of them are forgetting about the basics of networking. People need to know you and trust you before they will want to do business with you. So many people fail in networking because they don't understand that. Well, let me share a few thoughts that came to my mind while watching today's show:
1. In my opinion there is no such thing as "New School" and "Old School". What You're calling New School is nothing but an evolutional step. New technologies offer new ways of interacting on a lot of fields - and MLM is no exception to this.
2. New technologies simplify communication - especially long distance. But they do not (can not) substitute personal integrity or - generally spoken - the human factor.
3. Evolution is a process of trial and error and selection. Nothing different in MLM. New technology will last, where it adds something substantial and vanish, where it doesn't.
4. New technology will last in MLM, where it meets the most important criteria; where it is able to carry the true spirit of MLM:
MLM = "Menschen lieben Menschen!" (German for "People love People!")

I think the most telling thing about MLM 2.0 is seen in your interview of Mike Dillard. The part of the interview where he is talks about going out and getting jobs to build specific skills. How he went out and became a telemarketer to learn how to effectively communicate and sell over the phone. The guy has serious offline skills. But everyone only wants to talk about his online stuff. I suspect that a large part of his MLM success is generated offline.

Trust is a person to person thing, to bring someone in to an opportunity has to be developed over time and not done as an instant "sale" a term I dislike.
The Internet however is awesome (I think) to maintain excellent communications with the organization and to train, inspire and motivate, hmmm isn't that what you are doing...lol

I'm not so sure that Eric is completely using "New School" techniques. Yes he is using technology to send this message. I get it that aspect of today's message is New School...

(Personally I think Tony Scarcia hit it square on the nail head when he stated he hates the terms New vs Old.)

But his message is definitely "Old school." In my opinion, Building trust and transfering belief is still the domain of old school. Not impossible, but very difficult using strictly technology without the human touch.

As far as Coca Cola goes, their trust and belief was built long ago.. they created an entire category much like kleenex, post its, Google, IPOD, etc. In fact, I would challenge a person to go into a Hotel Meeting without a Coca Cola product being in the meeting room or the Hotel it's being held in.

So I guess my question is this... Is It possible to use "New School" media sources and still be "Old School"? Or is it all New and Old.? Reminds me of the lyrics of THE WHO.. "...new boss, same as the old boss..."

I would say that perhaps we both think different things are Old and New.

I would say:

List of names and Hotel/Home meetings are old,
Videos, facebook and twitter are new.

Eric is NOT doing Hotel meetings to build his list and sell his coaching program, and eventually to sell his stuff-
He is using videos, facebook, and twitter to do ALL of those things, and I'm quite sure he's had people BEGGING to be sponsored by him.

What he says is immaterial, it is new school TECHNIQUES.

I agree with you, there are a lot of things the internet can do to allow us to expose a lot more people than without it. However, the internet will never replace relationships, which I believe is the key to retention.

The relationship that I already had with my sponsor's father is what sealed the deal and got me in. Going to a personal development conference and meeting many of the six figure earners on my team made it real for me because I realized by meeting them in person that they were real people. Becoming friends with my upline in California who was making six figures at the time and flying out to California to spend a week with him and other friends on our team began to lock me in. Watching him go from making $100,000 a year to $100,000 a month prove to me that "you don't have to get in early to make big money."

Meeting one of the top income earners and shocked at how nervous he was before going out and rocking the presentation convinced me that I could do this business. Going back out to California with my upline and going with him and one of our friends to the Lexus dealership to buy a Lexus gave me a vision of what was possible. Finally, going down to Maryland and spending a full day with my upline who is the #2 income earner in the company, watching how he works, hearing the story behind the story (like how it took 5 years in the industry prior to joining our current company before he finally put it together) and riding around in his Ferrari and seeing the reactions from people was when I made the decision that network marketing will always be a part of my life, not matter what I decide to do from an entrepreneur prospective.

The internet can NEVER replace those things.
