NMPRO #199 – Do More Than 90% of MLMers Fail?

December 17th, 2009 Email This

Do more than 90% of people who join Network Marketing fail to make a profit?  I discuss this topic with MLM expert Len Clements.  Question of the Day (QOTD): Do you think New Year’s Resolutions are worth making?

  • I love this episode....I think this makes it even more important to set realistic expectations for our new people and NOT over hype what we've got our hands on!
  • Ron Danielewicz
Great information! The analogies are so very True!

I am not sure what the percentage might be. I know that we live in a society that favors instant gratification, we have to have it now....... and we are always looking for a quick fix to fill ourselves up or feel better. And it is definitely not going to happen in this profession. If one really desires a better quality of life and financial freedom one will have to pay a price, because this profession is a true journey of transformation.......and any true transformation one will encounter pain...........that means having to change and grow and to face and look at oneself with ruthless honesty......it is a willingness to face ones own weakness's, overcome one's own obstacles through the power of God's love, faith and trust......... belief and commitment......... and more times than not it will require sheer will power, determination, courage and endurance. In order to endure one will have to grow a warrior spirit. I heard once that whatever you grow....it grows you. And it is true, especially in this business, one cannot be faint hearted to stay in the race and continue on the journey. If you choose to stay on the journey and if it is truly for you...... the highest and greatest God given gift you will find is more of yourself and your God given potential and talents in the process of serving your fellow man.......This business is a true gift......it is purpose and mission driven, it demands that you be more and become more. It requires a sacrificial life, because it is a life that is greater than oneself because this profession is a true life of service......It is all about the first and second commandment.....Loving your God and loving your neighbor as yourself, and the Divine seeds of wanting to give more and to become more have been planted within all of us .

    Hi Manuel,

Thank you so much for your feedback on my comments....I appreciate that
you your time to let me know. I really do feel and believe what I
said.......This business is quite a remarkable journey.......and there is a
price to be paid for manifesting our mission....purpose and dreams......and
it is all worth it! Nice to hear from you and again Thank you so much and
stay in touch if you want.

Great episode! Thank you Eric and Len for sharing your approach. You very well answered one of the FAQ inside mlm and outside mlm.

    1) The statement “More than 90% of people fail (quit) in MLM” is true, but it shows only the half truth. The full truth is that “More than 90% people fail in mlm AND it’s also true that more than 90% people fail (quit) in every other field”

    2) There is a fine difference between quit and fail. People do not fail rather they quit.

    3) Everything worthwhile has a price tag. Success also has its own price tag. But this price is in the form of ‘hardship’, ‘consistency’, ‘perseverance’, ‘hard work’, ‘integrity’ and ‘passion’. Other rule is you have to pay this price "in full" as well as "advance": No credit, No installment. And 90% people are not willing to pay the price. They think success to be a matter of chance or luck.

Eric your plan of 1-3-5-7 "odd years" shows real expectations and guidelines. Its not odd at all. This will definitely remove the “lottery mentality and will increase the success ratio.

“Quitters never win and winners never quit”

  • QOTD: well YEA! But not necessarily just for the sake of making one because it’s a new year. You can make a “New Year’s Resolution” in June if that’s what you need to do, if that’s when the inspiration hits you or if that’s when you get sick and tired of being sick and tired or whatever it is for you that inspires you to decide to start TODAY to create a new life for yourself and your loved ones.

I guess that’s my long answer, my short answer would simply be “yes”.
  • Love it, love it, love it.
    "You evil gym people".
"They don't do it long enough to do it good enough".
    Great content guys.

QOTD: New years resolutions are great and certainly worth it however they too are like today's subject.
People make the resolution yet 'most' don't follow through. Oh, but it's the resolution's fault isn't it :)
  • Ria Leermakers
    I agree completely.
Most of the people still have the 'lotery mentality'.
Thank you for 199 NMPro's! I think I've seen them all.

2010 will be my best year ever!
  • These words are to the point. Mr. Clements has an awesome point of view. For sure that these words help a lot of people in the business. Thanks for the interview Eric. Tomorrow is a big BIG celebration for the 200th show. Take care and regards from your biggest fan.

When you start to learn and adopt the skill sets that are required in this industry .. by listening to professionals like Eric, miraculous things can start to happen. Business gets easier ... notice I didn't say "easy" ... and results start to happen. You become the "go to" person simply because you tell it as it is .. straight down the line.

I know Eric shows us by example of creating realistic expectations ... that is the only way to be if you want to build a huge team ... and the only way to be to maintain your posture, self dignity and self respect.

I wish you all massive success in your businesses and look forward to shaking you all by the hand and chatting on our journey ahead. Yours in true prosperity and freedom .. Peter
  • Being free is hard for employees who are used to being told what to do. Freedom, surprisingly enough, is hard on bosses who got used to telling others what to do and felt powerful in their offices behind a batallion of assistants. With NM, it is like being a kid again: making new friends, sharing a business you know nothing about and making a fool of yourself. It is hard, emotionally and we are not as resilient as we were. I know in my heart that this is the best business for me and when confronted, I do fine. I have a hard time going out to get it. Emotions paralize me. I know I will succeed though because my mind is set on doing it... It might take a while: isn't the journey the best part of getting there?
  • In my experience much of what passes for data is made up out of thin air. I want to see the data, not someone else's opinion of data but the real raw data. You can find the data on the number of people who passed the real estate exam in every state in the USA, or the number of people who passed the various insurance license exams. You will discover, if you look at the data, that nearly 95% who pass and pay for their first year's license quit in the first year and never return. They never pay for another license. There is no way to know how many began the course work for both and never took or passed the exams. Something about human being needs to have the experience of 'being' on the bike and making the attempt to have it work. No amount of study provides what is needed know how to ‘do’ anything. Watching from the stands is not the same as playing on the court. Many people just don't like who they have to become to be successful at real estate, insurance or network marketing. Not everyone experiences the satisfaction of 'balance' in a profession. Not everyone likes chocolate ice cream either. No other industry is as easy to enter and start, with the potential to have nearly unlimited income, as Network Marketing has. Not one.

QOTD: The value of New Year’s resolutions is while the likelihood of any coming to pass is not good, the likelihood of one coming to pass without a resolution is zero. Turning a resolution into a goal with dates attached supported by committed action to insure the dates are met increases the likelihood of success dramatically.
  • Len, thanks for the info, but I would like to see some evidences on these kind of statistics.
When we say things like that I think in order for the profession to get more and more accredited, we need to show documents, links to places where we can use them to show to our prospects, and also for us to get more and more focused on the industry.
For example, I have heard from another NMPro that the unemployment in the US is around 17%! I tried to get information about this, from the media referred at that time as being the one disseminating that info, and I couldn´t find anything.
Info is good in the exact proportion we can use them, that is my beliefe.
Being you a very knowledge person about the facts of NM, can you provide some info we can use?
Thanks and this could be one of the most important shows Eric posted...

  • THERE IS A PROMISED LAND and WE WILL GET THERE TOGETHER !!

QOTD- I think resolutions are made to be broken. CREATE goals and take action no matter what time of the year it is! I see nothing magical about Jan 1 as far as setting goals are concerned.

So Eric Are you winning your bet with IVAN so far? I have committed to working out 3-5 times a eek since early october with good success. The weight has''t come off as quickly as I'd like due to my DIET SUCKS... But I am noticing that I am gaining muscle, especially in my arms. so I guess that meaning I'm converting fat to muscle and my ratio is getting better. See you San Francisco, Leaner and Stronger.

    God Bless You for everything..
  • It has always amazed me that people will work for 20 - 30 years for a company and think nothing about it to get $1200.00 a month for the rest of their life and feel that is fair. Then to work for themselves they give it less time and less effort and wonder why it doesn't work - No work - no muscles. Your skills follow your value and attitude
  • enrique62
    Eric:
How is your exercise and getting in shape commitment going?
  • Jessie
Thanks for all of this great information. Love the gym analogy. 2010 will be a great year
  • MattinJaxfl
Great show. Great analogies. I love your method of sharing expectations Eric. When in the recruiting process do you find yourself sharing this 1-3-5-7 information?

(QOTD) If you are a goal setter I don't think you need the New Year to let you know that it is time to plan If you are not, I think it is important because something is better than nothing in my humble opinion.
  • Erik
Thats great info, Tim Sales is saying the same thing.
I like NYRs because they give hope for a new fresh start. But I think few people makes their goal.
  • Alvaro
Thanks for everything you are doing here, I`ve learned a lot watching your show, and has been very helpful for me because I`m only been for 4 months in the mlm buisness... I`ve not watched all the shows yet but I will.

Thanks again for such great information - love the analogy to gym membership!
QOTD - New Year Resolutions have never worked for me - but I am still going to make one this year - because I am more determined to make this one work, it means more to me now than ever before so time will tell!
  • jbledsoejr
Great video! The gym analogy is right on point...years ago I used to sell fitness memberships for a large fitness club and we knew that 75% or more of those people we would never see again...of the 25% or so that we did see again many of those we wouldn't see after the 1st month, 2nd month, & so on. But of those that remained the success rate was pretty high...that is where you find the true measurement or success rate.

So buying a membership doesn't guarantee physical fitness if you don't consistently use it, just as joining a company (in this industry or any other) doesn't guarantee financial fitness...you have to show up and take action consistently. Good stuff!
  • eddyoshaughnessy
Great show again Eric - I believe you need Focus , Vision , and a long term Plan
And you just keep Pounding the Rock !
  • Jillian
Well Eric - hope you are feeling the love. Great analogy and great examples for sceptics. Thanks again for our breakfast rendezvous.
  • wlee
All the best to you and your this holiday season Eric. And thanks for the great work on NMPRO! This interview with Len Clements came at a great time for me - as have many of the others before. Just when I was letting some doubt creep in, boom, there you and Len were. And thanks for referring The 50th Law. I bought it last week and am half way through and know that I will be rereading and highly recommending this book. If you hadn't recommended it I wouldn't have bought it because of the 50 Cent connection. Just shows to go ya.... I have a new respect for him and Robert Greene. BTW, if you don't know of these books already I think you would be interested: Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth and Happiness by Richard Thaler & Cass Sunstein; and The Fifth Discipline by Peter Senge. It's about creating a learning organization. Have a good one!
  • very good analogy to the gym membership! great video!
  • jmsteber
Well Eric great one again and what is interesting from this gym example is that I use it for the development of BNI chapters on my region. 2 options when signing in a gym either you go to the bar watching people training hard and sweating and you dream about your future extraordinary and sulptural body and nothing will ever happen, either you start with one machine and use the coach to guide you on how to use it at its best and step by step, working hard your body will begin to change and yes one day you finally have the dream body you always wanted. This is absolutely applicable to our industry and I can only recommend using this example. Thanksssssssssssssssssssssssssss and have a great winter day. Hey by the way it's snowing here in Paris, unuasul enough !!
