    leaders are made...agreed. Thanks
  • susanjohannesson
The day I become a good leader, I will celebrate - as a Diamond with all of you!
  • Elaine Baril
"Leaders are made" Good ;) I'll become one!!!!!
  • BobbyRay
A personal development program hooked up with a compensation plan.
  • Robertdiggsjr
    I think leaders are made
  • ViktoriaGuerin
Agree that leaders are made. DNA helps as Eric says and also the way you were brough up as a child. However anyone can learn anything if they want to and true leaders are self made.
  • jlt0wn
skill development & desire builds a leader. I've seen it happen.
  • Inger
As far as I can see it, not having all the experience you have, Leadership can only be developed if the wish to grow from the person is big enough and the coach/teacher is good enough...
Why? Because otherwise people dropout before something substantial is accomplished in themselves. They go back to the comfortzone.
  • Robbin
I think there has to be some leadership qualities within the person to develope. Unless they are willing to totally commit to it.
  • We are born with innate personalities, we are molded by our environment and experiences as children, and we receive spiritual gifts. Those things, combined with the communication and leadership skills we develop, re-create us to become leaders. We each have our own special style and need to have faith in our own abilities instead of trying to be just like someone else.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if all parents had network marketing leadership training before having children?
  • Lotta
With practice you can become a leader. So roll up your sleeves and start training.
  • Lotta
Med lite övning kan du bli en ledare. Så kavla upp ärmarna och börja träna.
  • classy70sgirl
I believe that leaders are a mixture of the two, because I think everyone is born with leadership within them, but it is what and who you are exposed to that either "makes you or breaks you". If you are exposed to personal development and grab the opportunity with both hands, the sky's the limit!
This is so true of myself and I've still go a long way to go! But am enjoying the journey.
    Classy70sgirl
  • I belief that leaders are made, that is the only way :)
  • mspaulamc
ANYTHING is possible ... however, my experience tells me that there is a raw quality of gumption that needs to be present in order for a leader to develop.

In my business, I look for people who display an edge to their thinking as I have found that often times, I can see leadership and greatness in many who have not given the same a second thought.

I look for people who maintain a "green light" interpretation of the world around them ... I believe this is the stuff leaders are made of .. and we need more leaders today than ever before...
  • crwood1967
Personal development is a must. There have only been a few born leaders, and even those leaders still needed training to fine-tune their leadership abilities. Leaders will emerge by their actions.
  • NexusResources
Stupid Aussie weather, bright, windy and overcast hehehe
  • AdvocareJax
I think it is important to understand both concepts. I have personally grown so much in my leadership, but I have found many obstacles in helping develop people who were too low on the leadership scale into leaders in my organization. As I have shifted my focus to looking for people who already have leadership skills it is much easier to develop them in to true leaders.
  • I agree on the mix of both.
  • Bea Resnick
Developing a business of duplication in which we desire a large group of people who will do a few things consistently over a period of time, we are looking for followers who will eventually lead. If we find those who are already "leaders," there's a possibility they may not agree to follow the plan - or be "coachable." If we find those who truly will follow the plan, they will automatically become leaders in time.
  • Vonnita2010
I believe that you can have certain skills when you are born, like being extroverted, or friendly, and that through the years those skills or talents can be either developed or put down, in the same area, you are also born with some talents or skills that you don't have and that you can learn and develop through time, it all deppends on the way you are raised and once you are older on what you want!!! it is a mixture of both. :) This is why you can do and be who or what you want, and why some things are easier for some people, but nothing is impossible for anybody unless they don't want it!
  • CarlosVera
There's no such thing as a born leader. Personal development is the only way to become a true leader........
  • John Spardella
I agree with Eric. I think genetics can play a role but I also believe leaders can be made/developed.
  • pech
I think that a person who develops leadership in many cases can become a better leader than someone who is a born leader.
  • Mark from Germany
the question is: at what point and why did a leader become superior to the follower ? both were born equally naked and both had to learn dada and mama from scratch ..
  • Jeroen Lingier
QOTD: I believe &- 'monkeys' have an advantage, but you need to devellop some skills.
From Belgium this is Jeroen Lingier.
  • shawncyr
I believe leaders are made. I remember going to a martial art conference and listening to the Grandmaster describe his journey. He said that he was clumsy and uncoordinated. He then said that he would train daily, 1000's of repetitions. And now he is the Grandmaster. He said, "If I can do it, anyone can do it. Just work hard."
We make ourselves. We are Michaelangelo and we are creating David. What we become is that David. So, let's make it the best one possible.
  • alltheverybest
I believe that Leaders make themselves. You cannot 'make' a leader that doesn't want to lead... it has to come from within. Of course you can help them to develop.
  • annenz
Am enjoying the upskilling, believe most things in life are left to personal effort and choices - personal development is one of those choices. The journey is interesting.
  • Steve Weaver
Leaders are made. For instance, President Abe Lincoln comes to mind.
I am proud of my personal growth efforts.
  • I agree, leaders can be developed, nurtured, and trained!
  • CINDYSU
I'm so glad that my sponsor recruited me even though I'm not yet a leader. I am developing into a leader and am enjoying that journey, continuing to grow.
  • Damijan81
I tend to agree with this show, i have seen people that had natural talent and leadership skills do nothing, if you look at a large percentage of top leaders in our company and hear there stories they where normal average people that had a work ethic, desire and made a DECISION to go for the dreams not some natural born leaders. Thats what i love about our industry we all have a chance if we want it.
  • I love This...I was sailing with my australian friends around the Great Barrier Reef (on their honeymoon)
years ago...and still have the memories of Hayman and Hamilton Islands imprinted in my mind-and pictures still on the wall form my Whitsunday island adventure....so Yes I believe leaders are made...some of us have it in DNA and being eldest child..also high expectations from authority figures...but still..up to each one of us to develop our skills in those leadership areas to reach the highest levels of our potential.
  • kgadol
I agree. I think these is an internal drive to succeed and grow and with that, leaders can be made.
  • Luis (Pelon)
Leaders are made, we are all leaders the important thing is to make the decision to be one and work to develop ypur self
  • AviPeer
Leaders are not born, over the time you become a leader, if you wish to.
  • Jay VanNostrand
I think we're all born champions and leaders who are entitled to wealth and abundance...then we're conditioned against it...we reclaim our birthright by reprogramming our faulty mindset 'operating system and synergistically learning the skills that bring out and enhance our innate gifts and abilities...it's ALWAYS nature AND nurture!
  • I guess when we network marketers say find leaders and don't try to development them, what we really mean is open the opportunity for them to develop leadership qualities and let those who desire to change and improve themselves avail of the opportunity. Let them self identify and then we'll gladly help. The greatest folly is for us to want change more than they want it for themselves.
  • jbledsoejr
I agree...leaders are formed, shaped, created from a multitude of things that influence them...so YES anybody can become a leader. Thanks for sharing Eric!
  • randyhendrickson
I hope it is true. I was not born a leader. I am trying to make myself a leader through program like this one
  • rasdaniels
Wow- beautiful. Thank you very much for the reminder that we don't want it easy; we want to get better.
  • lorrainehotton
YOur encouragement is a great help to a new network marketer, such as myself.
  • JudasPierce
becoming a leader is always a choice....some day in your life you will have to choice to become a leader in something.
  • socorro
you are correct Eric, just like any profesion , it help if you love and enjoy what you do and i love this profesion
  • socorro
you are correct Eric, just like any profesion, it help if you enjoed what you do and i love this profesion
  • ronaldvandomburg
I absolutely believe that leaders can be developed. I have the experience myself that I became a leader and guess what....I like it more than I thougth was possible!
  • Luis Gringras
I alwys read book, and went to Leadership Clases, but I discoverd that the best place to learn and practice how to become a Leader is in Network Marketing profesion
  • I use to think leadership was something was bestowed upon people, like a job promotion, today I know you become a leader the very moment that "you believe" that you are a leader
  • I think that your environment at an early age can give you a head start. People like Richard Branson had a good start in life so I'm sure that it helps. But if you come from a less positive background you do have a lot more work to do to learn the necessary skills for leadership.
  • conniegleave
You definitely look like you're having a great time...NICE TAN BTW!

Are leaders made or born that way? I think it's a mixture of the two. I think you first have to 'have something' inside that says you can do it (whatever "it" is) (born), then you need to develop and nurture it (made).
  • I do believe it is a mix of both...there must be something deep down inside, but from that point and forward you build leaders and in that way they are MADE. And those who are MADE, have to decide for themselves that they will be leaders, and take responsibility for their own growth.
  • veronikakari
As you said, DNA helps, and to some extend we can learn anything.
  • Jilliangene
I think as with most things few are born, most are cultivated over time. If lucky people like you and other mentors are in our lives from an early age. The ones who show a natural talent still have to fine tune their leadership skills. For many of us (me) there are more areas to work in making me a great leader.
Remember your sun tan lotion. The sun looks amazing compared to my snow storm.
  • jerryscribner
    Couldn't agree more
  • Irina
Becoming a Leader requires a certain mind-set. It takes years to develop it.
  • David Wright
Love the emphasis on personal development. If not looking for "natural" leaders, what traits would one look for in a potential leader?
  • Gustavo Muñoz - Colombia
I think that in order to become a leader you need to first start working in yourself. It is a career that you need to built with persistency and commitment
  • karivankleef
I think leaders are made. You have to have the desire, passion and motivation to become a leader but anyone can be a leader if they want it bad enough.
  • keith murfet
Surely even born leaders have to be made or guided to be truly effective.
  • jeanalbert
Some leaders may be born, but I believe that the majority are made. Leadership comes with time, experience, knowledge, and the willingness to lead. The network marketing industry is unique in that it builds leadership in more people than in any industry. Most other industries just build workers.
  • Donna Wheaton
    Morning

Leaders are made and I am learning to be a better leader through personal development. Thank you Eric for all your leadership in helping me become a PRO.
  • John Boyd
Leaders have belief, give belief and beleive in others!
  • All leaders are made. Some were made early and we might call them born leaders, but we all have to work on the skills to become leaders.
  • happyhealthybob
I think that everyone has a little bit of leadership abilty in them. It could be a tiny tiny tiny bit, but it is there and personal development will bring it out. There are some who have it in them and they know what they are doing and the personal development shapes and cleans it up.
  • garyparmenter
Leadership comes from knowledge and experience. It takes time for that to happen. Yes leaders are made.
  • raybeattie
I believe leaders are made. Someone with the desire to become a leader will take responsibility to learn to what it takes to become a leadrer.
  • FrankMarshman
The organization that develops more leaders than any is the US Military. They take ordinary men and women and through training and discipline produce the most amazing group of leaders there are. I believe that leadership is chosen by an individual who decides to learn the skills of leadership. That is why so many ordinary people can become successful in network marketing.
  • denagottlieb
Well, I'm sure trying to develop my leadership skills.
It's not that easy cultivating it in my downline, though...
  • Sometimes you are born a leader and it's natural, but I've found in Network Marketing that being a "born leader" or even having owned a company prior to MLM that you have successfully lead, doesn't necessarily transfer those skills automatically in this genre. It's a matter of relearning skills!
  • hanneretvik
I agree that you can become a leader through hard work of developing leadership skills, but if your DNA already has some of the right ingredients, perhaps it will take less time and effort. Thanks for the encouragement, Eric, I WILL become a leader sooner or later.
  • juanfernandogutierrez
Many leaders are there, but they do not know they are leaders. In my organization, there are some people that at first they where no leaders, and now they are, just because before they did not had the opportunity before
  • Coming into network marketing, finding a leader is intimidating. The leaders in our circle of influence are all on our 'chicken list'. That's where the personal development come in. We need to develop the belief in ourselves, our product/service, our company, and our magnificent industry. As our belief grows, we develop posture and our vision becomes crystal clear. And as our vision becomes crystal clear, you start to develop the characteristics of a leader. That's the power in becoming the leader that people want to follow. Now, just do it!
  • kristibateman
YES!!! Developing myself into a leader. It is nice to know that I CAN DO THIS.
    Thanks Eric
  • timandtricia
Real leadership has to start with a clear vision of where you're going and a strong desire to lead people to the promise land.
  • gingerva
When I first got started in NM I read "only Leaders make money" and Leadership became my new goal. Learning how to become one took a lot of self-discovery. As the saying goes, "if you work on your business, you'll make money. If you work on yourself, you'll make a fortune".
  • peterragg
We have to "step up to the plate" and take personal responsibility for our teams. If you are not prepared to be a leader in Network Marketing you will not achieve the life changing rewards that are there for the taking, don't be surprised by this.

    regards
    Peter Ragg
  • Agneta Rebo
I agree that you can develop leadership skills. I think that the most important thing is to decide what you want and make a commitment to do what it takes and learn what you need to learn. And of course DO IT.
  • Thanks Eric! I agree, leaders are made through personal development. Anyone can CHOOSE to be a leader. It just takes work.
  • I personally think that some leaders are born. You can tell with some kids that want to take control and some that don't. But...in our great industry, we are making some great leaders all the time. I think the majority of the leaders in our industry are made. How awesome is network marketing where everyone has a chance to become a leader and grow.
  • Shovers
What better self development, than becoming a leader. What other industry can you get this kind of self development.
  • mrmauriocrawford
I remember that interview w/ Sherman. It was great. Finding leaders is awesome. But, I believe that some people will come along and join the business and not be the greatest ever. But, their "High Noon" will come and they develop into something great. I've seen too many stories that prove this.

    Thanks Eric
  • I agree completely. 99% of leaders are made through developing and harnessing their greatness they didn't know they had!
  • barryburgin77
I think its both. I believe DNA does have something to do with it. But I also believe that the leadership "gene" has to be cultivated, nurtured and given the proper encouragement and training. There is always the person, maybe thru sports or an occupation, who is identified as a "natural born leader" and rises to the occasion. But I think these persons are few and far between. With the right mentor or the right situation, leadership skills can be a learned behaviour.
  • jean_albert
"Made" leaders give hope to new distributors that they can develop their skills for success!!
  • nikigombis
The truth is that we do have a better way and that is what motivates me to keep trying. Thanks for the encouragement.
  • enrique62
I believe is a mixture of the two but it is mostly made.
  • agelfederico
I think is a mixture of two, but I also think its much better to become one, and most important to help others become leaders as well.
  • Marion Bernard
Let it happen and be comforable as well with it.
  • This really makes a lot of sense. People are always looking for "that guy" instead of working towards creating it.
  • JenniferDu79
Thank you so much for clarifying that previous episode. After hearing him say that in the other episode I figured he may be missing some great people by not looking for those that can be developed as well.
  • eddyoshaughnessy
I believe that an average person with above average desire can be very successful
  • Yes, we have to develop leaders... but we need to start with people that are looking for a change... looking for something better... looking to improve... looking for something!
  • lynn hall
Both men and women are leaders some have the skills others have to develop them.
  • frankdiaz
    thanks again
  • Yeah, I wish I was there too! Looks awesome!!
I believe leaders are made - definitely. I think it's a matter of confidence. Some get it early in life, others later. But people will follow the confident person.
  • ritafulton
    Eric,

I beleive "leaders" are developed. Some folks may have certain characteristics that enable them to develop quicker or differently than others, but I believe if a person is coachable (teachable) he/she can become an awesome leader. I am not there yet, but on my journey.
  • There's hope for me then....I'm developing leadership skills as we speak (write, text....whatever).
  • HoracioMejia
I think leadership are made, since the practice of skills is what defines them. You practice skills, so yes, I agree, leadership is learned. It is an attitude.
  • Mark_AbrahamsUK
I know that leaders are made, even if we - as individuals - are born with advantages (or more opportunity than difficulty) it is all about the way we think. Great leaders have great relationships. I am enjoying my relationship with you Eric...and yes, I am learning to be a NWM professional so that I can work hard to tell the world my story and our business. Thanks again Eric
  • Some people may have some natural abilities... that appeared with their package and environment. That and $1.25 buys 4 liters of Coca-Cola. Most people begin at square one, maybe three and progress at steps that are a combination of their willingness to put lessons into play and their environment. We live where self esteem is often cherished and nurtured at the expense of leadership lessons. It is EASIER to give someone the answer but asking them to look it up, even perhaps giving them a clue where to look it up, requires a different skill set.

All the leaders I have ever met or read about walked a path a path of development. Some were on the path of leadership and others had it thrust on them. We don't hear about the ones who quit, gave up and stayed in the valley of ....
  • hlj521
I love this message. Notice that the new one is not up yet...I will check back later as I love hearing your awesome wisdom!
  • kayanita
I believe that we look for those people who have an innate desire and courage to do something different with their life, then we groom them with personal development and step by step we help guide them to become the leaders in network marketing.
  • jaco stiner Israel
Hey Eric I think everyone who in the network marketing has to be a leader and this is decision of every one
  • carolbarrett
I'm here Eric--ready for my Friday training.
  • Here as promised. 05.02.2010. Fired Up and Focused.
  • Katie N
    Rerun? Still a great message......
  • Cee_G
If you want to learn a new skill, like leadership, and are interested enough and have the desire enough to put in the work, you can learn. Some find leadership comes more easy than others. It is like anything else, you have to put in the work to get the results.
  • gkamlm
I think leaders might be made more in network mktg than many other professions.

The oppty is there for ine to really apply oneself and the sky is truly the limit.
  • Darnell
I do believe leaders are made and some are found. I know I'm a leader in the making based upon my personal development and it speaks for itself. Thanks so much for keeping us encouraged to knowing we all have the skills and ability to become leaders if we work on making them evolve. Trust me when I say this I would so love to be there with you in OZ along the Great Barrier Reef...for now I appreciate you sharing the wonderful panoramic view!! Thanks so much Eric....looking 4ward to the next video!!
  • Erik
Still no new vidoeo ? Looks like they have some technical problems today
  • karenandian
This industry is where any who wishes to develop themselves to be a leader. Thats a stone cold fact! Thank you Eric!
  • NMPRO #235 – Momentum carrys itself.

Looks like Eric has had some technical issue posting todays video. So in total respect of that and all the work he has done already. I would like to help the momentum Eric has generated here and post a thread myself. True momentum as Eric would say will continue to grow and develope even if YOU are there or not. I believe Eric has generated momentum with these NMPro shows.

QOTD : What would you need to become or DO to create momentum in ANY activity you do?
  • germarl
Its all about Personal development - seldom does our income exceed our Personal Growth...
  • Ton Oosterwijk
I think that the NWM industry is one of the view which allows leadership to be truly developed.
The NWM industry stimulates and encourages people to develop themselves into leaders.

The integrity of the person involved will determine if he will become a leader (by example).
The beauty, I find, that everybody is himself responsible to determine When or Why he/she will take the leap and start that path.

By sharing our best practices we can help ourselves and others!
  • Define leader!
Everyone is a leader. Everyone has someone who looks up to them.
The difference is in the context.
  • eugenejohnson
john C maxwell talks about this....... i deff wasnt a leader when i started this so thank God leadership could be developed
  • peterburrows
Leaders made ? ....I'm not so sure ! That suggests that it can happen whether they like it or not.
However, can leaders 'grow'.... yes for sure, because that puts all the elements in place.
    The desire from the individual.
    The right circumstances.
The right mentors and training.....and so on.
  • Jessi
I believe that you are born with leadership qualities, but you might need help with developing your leadership skills. You can also learn how to become a leader.
  • orlyalbo
Leaders are made. i agree with that. most of the people do not discover the qualitys thay have, until one day thay found them.
  • I agree Eric. Leaders are made. Though there are some that have the advantage of being more forward, more outgoing and naturally seem to gather people among them. However, anyone that want to accept the responsability, honesty and integrety it takes to be a leader, can develop all these skills - especially in our profession.
  • I'm a leader in my own mind. Getting others to follow has been the challenge. Thanks for the wisdom.
  • rosslopez
I like this meaning of leadership I found:
"Leadership is ultimately about creating a way for people to contribute to making something extraordinary happen."

I think anybody can be a leader if we really want to and sometimes it is natural and it's inside of us when we desire and decide to be one of them. Somethimes we don't realize we are already leaders, when we demonstrate we have the capacity to do somethinig, guide the people to success and use our expertise to improve the way we are doing things, for sure something extraordinary will happen.

That's why we continously have to improve our personal development, be couchable, teach our best practices and learn from the expertise of others, this will help us to be better leaders =o)

    Hugs from Mexico
    Rossana :P
  • emmettb
I believe that leaders are made. While I was in the US Navy, you were given the opporturnity to lead, some took it some did not. Those who took the task were trained to be effective at leading. I think the same applies in NWM, some will take up the task, it is then our job to train them and give them the tools to become effective. The same holds true for parenting, we become mentors not instructors. Guiding in life decsions not making the "call" for our kids.
  • carolmcwilliams
I believe we can become leaders, but the core ingredient for all leaders is that they have the passion and drive to succeed, and will work very hard to develop the skills to lead. Mixed with skills is the burning desire to reach for bigger dreams and not be dissuaded by setbacks. I think these qualities supersede environmental factors. Certainly there is some combination that makes it easier to become a world class leader but fortunately we all have the freedom to define in an authentic way for ourselves how our leadership will look. It is not only about superstars and charisma. We each must find our own voice, strengths and talents to cultivate and express.
  • cherisizzles
I believe, as many have already commented, that every person is born with leadership potential inside of them. But nature and environment, whether it be teachers, family member, life circumstances, etc., somehow convince most that they are NOT leaders. This is heart-breaking. I believe that even if we had a world FULL of leaders, we would still be able to get along beautifully, because we would still all have different strengths. I feel like I am a natural leader, but I am definitely more comfortable with leadership in certain aspects of my life and personality than others ... and in those other areas, it is almost as if I am a completely different person. So strange how I feel like I can be so confident and strong in some respects, and yet so weak and insecure in others! But it gives me something to be constantly striving for!
  • I think that the various circumstances in life give the opportunity, to all kinds of people, to show leadership and, you'll find that the leaders of peaceful times , are rarelly the ones of times of struggles. MLM leaders are very special. They rise in times of trouble and take their teams along.
  • wlee
I think it's a combination of all three - a select few are born to lead, or at least have some inborn drive or desire to do so and learn along the way. Most are made, of their own accord or through necessity, desire, or situation. And I believe they all share one thing in common that was expressed so eloquently by Nelson Mandela after his release from 27 years in prison: "The glory in living lies not in never falling down but in getting up every time we do."
  • dterrell
    Interesting, thanks Eric!
  • coltsco
Yes, I believe that many people have leadership qualities. Some decide to develop them and others are content to just follow. We need both.
  • feltricks
Jim Rohn used to say, "leaders aren't trained, they are found".
I think all of us have a leadership spirit inside, the real challenge is to let it flourish.
Once you found it, you will never let it go, then the challenge is awake the leader inside the people we involve in the business.
  • kamalharris
I truly believe that the qualities are already inside the ones that become leaders. It just has to be unleashed. The root word of education is "educo" or the verb "educe" meaning to draw forth from within. It's bringing out what's already inside. Many people have superior leadership qualities that go unrecognized because they don't have the self belief that they can lead.
  • I think everyone is 'born' leader but most are talked and taught out of there greatness at an early age.
  • Pepeneto
I think some people develop certain characteristics because their jobs, because their parents, because the situation they came through, and they become leaders, and so many others DECIDE to become leaders through personal development and getting the skills that is needed.

Be a leader is a decision, if you got some leadership in advance when you come to MLM, is going to be faster than If you dont have any skill, that's it.
  • travelprohawaii
Thanks it gives me hope that one day as I grow that I will be as successful as those that has done it before me. I know in my heart of hearts that this is the way for everyone to be the success God wants them to be!
  • georgeman
I've heard people say "leaders are found, not made". Let me think about this a bit, when someone says this, are they not also insinuating that personal advancement and development is not possible? That nobody born into poverty can ever overcome? Well, we know that the most difficult situations people can be in have been overcome. I believe it is said mainly to keep a N.Marketer from sitting on one person in the hopes that the person will do what they should. Just a hunch, I'm not really sure why someone might say this. Great training Eric, thank you.
  • caronwashington
I believe its a mixture of both. I believe that anybody can develop the skills to be a leader if they want. They may have the raw materials but certain situations allow the leader to come out. Some people from jump learn leadership qualities early but most have to earn them and develop them.

I have a number of shows to comment on as I was away in northern Alberta without access to a computer! First of all the concept of a "major blast" really sits well with me as it makes perfect sense on how to stimulate growth in your business when you need/want to or when you're in the early stages of building. When that flury of activity dies down then the "2 a day" strategy will benefit your business greatly by steady increments of growth. A superb concept!
Your other report of 1-3-5-7 also rings true to me as I think building a substantial business cannot happen all at once...having those sorts of unrealistic expectations is propbably why people get discouraged and quit. The length of time is what makes the journey unique to each of us and will move forward according to our own development and learned skills! Thank you for bringing these ideas to your show.
  • Dee_Canada
    Hi Eric,

I absolutely agree that leadership can be developed. There ARE people who have natural charisma and leadership ability and I believe that at times the road can be shorter for them because of that....BUT...I also know that there are times when being a leader in ONE arena, does not necessarily translate into being an auotmatic superstar in another.

The great thing about our profession, is that it is an equal opportunity employer...and grants everyone the same opportunity to rise to the top. We market to THE WORLD....and so there is a WORLD full of personalities and styles that can succeed. The inforamtion to become a leader is available to ALL of us!!

THANK YOU for being part of that information...and education...and sharing it so freely!

    Dee
  • Yes, personal development. The best investment.
  • socorro
Erick I believe anyone can become a leader, if they wanted bad enough, they have to find the way to unlock their potential thank you
  • There are people who were born with leadership DNA, but everything is possible for the humans, and even a shy and quiet person I believe can learn how to become a leader. I very much hope for this because I am such kind of person.

NM is a great opportunity for anybody to develop yourself into a leader. With teachers like you Eric it's easier to fulfill.
    Thank you.
  • david_high
If I did not believe in the ability to learn and grow through personal development I would not be in this business. We All have the potential to become far more than we are at the present moment. You can get there from here!
  • We all have greatness inside of us. What makes leaders is the ability to find that greatness within ourselves and others and bring it out.
  • clairecameron
I believe we can all be leaders. It is important to recognize that leadership is not positional. It is an attitude along with a way of being in the world. It takes awareness and skills - awareness can be ignited and skills can be learned. PS I am loving seeing your escapades Down Under!
  • jennyc
Good to know, must work on development.
  • Eric, I think that were born with the ability to become leaders and through training, experience and development we become better and stronger leaders.
  • margarethockaday
all it takes is a person who is willing to take that step or challenge for them to become leaders
  • breynolds
I think you can find people with influence, but real leadership takes a focus effort for personal development.
  • julie67
I think it is both. Thank goodness we all don't have to be born with it! It reminds me of school when you had the kids who never had to study and had straight A's. Then you had the kids (like myself) who got good grades but had to work for it. I was always wishing I was the one who didn't need to study, but wasn't going to not succeed just because it took me more work to do it. Maybe it means more when you have to work for it.
  • Each of us is born with the ability to lead. That said, it is not enough for people to have leadership potential; it is our individual responsibility to develop our character, train ourselves on best practices for our chosen field of endeavor and practice our craft within a set of personal ethics. As Network Marketing Professionals, each of us needs to consider the following question if we aspire to become a leader. Am I willing to dedicate myself to the personal growth and success of those that follow in my footsteps and aspire to achieve personal success and grow their own leadership qualities.?
Leaders at every level are constantly aware that they’re "telling a great story;" one that consistently complements and pursues the goals of the organization and the teams of leaders you are working with. Can I become this person?
  • hpena
I believe leaders are MADE when they are put in a situation to lead. Kind of like "Jack" or "John Locke" on that show "Lost". They crash on an island and to survive they had to lead. I believe we all have Leadership DNA that lies dormant. For some people it was when they were selected as Quarterback in pee wee football and for other people it came later when they became a supervisor at their job, but we all get the opportunity to lead at some point. That's when that dormant DNA wakes up; one of my favorite lines is "FATHER, THE SLEEPER HAS AWAKEN" (cool points for anyone that can recognize which movie that's from).

That's why NWM is THE best profession, the second you sponsor someone YOU become the leader.

  • good show Eric
Australia is one of the places my wife wants to go
  • racingworm
Both. Some people are born with it and some have to be taught.
  • I'm with you Eric.. Leaders are definitely made!! Everything rises and falls on leadership!!
  • tambry
That's for reinforcing with us that leaders are MADE.
  • keithraines
If you met me a year ago I was not in a position in my life to lead anyone in MLM. Through personal development and a no quit attitude my future is looking quite bright. I believe I am becoming the leader others will follow in this business. Much thanks to my upline, and trainers such as eric I have learned the skills I need to be successful.
  • mbryant
I agree wholeheartedly. While some of us are more "natural" than other, leadership skills are learned, just like all other skills.
  • chipc
I think some people are born leaders, and the skills just come naturally. Some people are born with the ability to be leaders, but lack the confidence and know how. I believe I am in that category, but I'm determined to become a better leader. I am learning a lot from you. See in in San Francisco on the 15th.
  • latachia_2
Work on your personal developments& your skills. You can learn to become a network marketing leader&become a network marketing pro.
  • bethascoli
This is something I know to be true. I don't think I was born with leadership skills and I certainly wasn't taught them growing up. I'm still learning, but I feel more comfortable with my ability to lead people than I used to. It is a course of study that I will never give up, because my biggest goal in Network Marketing is to be one of the best leaders AND coaches. And I believe I can learn that from watching you Eric.

I think desire is a big part of becoming a leader - you have to want it. Because there are a lot of people that don't care about leading anyone, they just want to follow the crowd, do what's easy and let other people tell them what to do. That's what separates us network marketers from the rest of the population - whether or not we are leaders yet, we have the desire to become one. But I would also say that part of becoming a leader is the ability to follow someone/be coachable
  • Ellis3
What makes what you just spoke on SO true is the fact that millions of ordinary people "daily" go out and LEAD themselves to selling their products and opportunity. The overwhelming majority of them never thought they could do it. So they had to be MADE. And it took their decision, not a leader pulling them to do it. Thanks Eric.
  • Nelleke Scholten
I always thought that leaders are born and for some extand are made. I find it very interesting to learn that that isn't neccesarely true. Even when you're not a born leader you certainly cab become one. It all depends on how you are trained by true leaders to become a leader.
  • Tarashon Broomes
leaders can both be born and or made. certain situations can automatically turn someone into a leader and or change someone from being a leader. whether you are a born leader or not, you can become a leader if you choose take that role and become one.
  • This was good. There are the days when I feel like I will never get there, you just reminded me that everyday is a work in progress. Good Leadership is gained from experience.
  • maariee
Feels so good to hear this... Thanks for this week.
  • Ria Leermakers
Leadership is about skills. Some people bring a big leadership skillset, others have to develop these skills.
So in the end there has to be no difference, it's about developing those skills you don't already have.
I like the weather and te boats downunder.
  • martinvf
I think we all born being leaders. We all have the possibility to become world wide leaders. But while growing up our mind develops some kind of shield which makes us lack of self confidence.
It is only by personal development and reprogramming that we can take all that garbage from our minds, free them from fear and start thinking with our heart to GIVE to the world.

    Saludos from Aguascalientes, Mexico.
  • Thank you, Eric, I agree with you that leaders can be developed, DNA helps but it is not all there is to becoming a leader.
  • turjcxg
Eric, once again, I needed to hear that. Yes, I "know" this on an intellectual level but it really helps to hear you say it out loud and point blank. It gives hope to hear it! Thank you again and so much for your work on NMPRO for us!
  • bartonmurray
continual and never ending improvement....I heard that you have to be both confident and humble to be a great student and maybe that is true for becoming a leader too?
  • Gakungu
There are those who are born leaders, but others develop into being leaders through personal development.
  • I believe it's a mixture of both.
It takes courage and development to cement it in the world, because almost 95% of the times we are taught to accept mediocrity and fit in.
So personal development is the road back to the original leadership that delves inside.
  • Carlos Perez
Thru self development and learning, leaders are made, is so important!
  • It is both. I know who my leaders are and I'm not one yet, but with you and my leaders I will become one.. It will take a lot of work on my part.
  • Pete
Show everyone....never pre judge......it could really cost you!
  • Leaders are MADE. We are born with gender, gifts and traits. Leadership is an acquired trait. Different people just may need more or less effort to develop it.

I believe that the essential distinction of the levels of leaders and followers lies in the treatment of fear. Boldly go forth, ..or...”OK, You go ahead try and go first”. That difference of acting in the face of fear, or reacting because of fear is totally a learned behavior and a choice.

After that, whole sciences, philosophies take over. Pre-destiny topics, environmental influences, whatever, go ask Carl or Sigmund.

Someone can be a tall leader, but there are short ones too. Someone can be given leadership opportunities, but that doesn't mean they govern well. Someone who is extraverted can lead, so can an introverted person.

Fundamentally, I believe the "programming" from our life experience shapes us, AND the experiences themselves shape us. Once we find we really do have choices, we then chose to participate, or not, to lead, or to follow.

One is a leader if one has followers. Doesn't describe them as a leader of nations, though. Doesn't mean they are leaders in all areas of their life either.

A leader thinks ahead farther than others, and cares more about others.
Why? Because they chose to, do it more often, and it becomes part of their character.

I do think that the external appearance influences attraction but it is not exclusive. Someone who leads also has other qualities, such as self-confidence, and that shows.

Bottom line ... there is no doubt, leaders are made.

The next question is...by who (or is it whom)?
  • Leaders cannot possibly born. I believe they can be raised (or unraised), but the proof positive exists in the Network Marketing Industry is that they CAN be trained. In fact, for the success of anything that needs to be accomplished by a sustained effort of a large amount of people, that type of leadership MUST be developed. We are not born leaders in that sense.
  • Personal development is one of the key elements in making a leader. There are many more an it is up to the leader in each individual to use and development their own skills to become successful.
  • Leaders can be developed but can every person develop into a leader?

On another note last nights webinar was fantastic and I'm taking some points from both NMP Webinars and implementing them into a challenge plan for my team. I will award one ticket for the next local event to each person on my team that commits to watch and then comments back to me for x # of shows on the NMP message of the day.

I think this site is full of valuable information and the most wonderful resource (and it's free) to educate future NMP's
  • smreed
Great leadership definitely has to be developed and learned. I do believe that for some it comes much easier than others because of the way a person thinks and their character to begin with. For example, Just like a person can learn to play the piano. For some it can take years upon years to become great and for some rare few they can become great in virtually no time at all. And for the very rare few that sit down and can start playing immediately known as a prodigy.
  • gloriavintila
There can be innate talents in leadership. However, I believe that leadership is a skill that needs to be developed. I learned it myslef in my previous job as a cruise manager and I am learning it now as a network marketing practitioner aiming at becoming a network marketing professional.
  • jpmendoza
Leadership is a skill that is learned.
  • dlinkhart
I believe with desire and determination anyone can become a leader. But you REALLY have to desire it or the determination won't be there.

Hola Eric It´s Ok We can develope our skills as a person and in the profesion.

  • chriskemp817
Eric, I agree with you. Leaders are made with the right amount of self-discipline, hard work, and tenacity.
  • Totally agree that there probably is a mixture of both. The "leader" has to come from within for sure but in order to lead one has to first learn how to "follow". Anyone can do it you just have to have a big enough "Why?"
  • liora
    B"H
Eric you right, leaders are made but you can only achieve the leader tittle , when you learn and work hard on self -development, skills and discipline
  • hcapcarp
I believe that leadership is both born attribute and a learned skill. Many avoid leadership intentionally until thrust into that position. When there is no one to step up someone has to those who have experience has no choice, lest they be led by the inexperienced. Thus the term "blind leading the blind".
  • As a former Royal Navy Officer I have spent a lot of time studying and practicing leadership with different groups around the world and I'd offer that different leadership environments require different styles and characteristics that correspond with a variety of personality types (ENTJ being the usual favourite).

I would agree that leadership can be developed but I've certainly seen people that excel at leading others naturally (perhaps due to nature and nurture - ie the environment that they grew up in and the people that surrounded and supported them).

Stephen Covey's excellent book the 7 Habits of Highly Successful people maintains that everyone can improve their character, capability and leadership by following daily disciplines and utilising the space between stimulus and response to make better choices about behaviour and action.

In the 8th Habit he develops these observations and postulates that all great leaders (like Ghandi) are characterised by the possession of vision, discipline and passion governed by conscience (Hitler had the first 3 but not the 4th) all of which can be learned and developed by daily disciplines (habit 7 - sharpen the saw).

I note that some MLM companies utilise a similar daily disciplines approach to develop their leaders and it's no coincidence (I'd wager) that some of these come from Utah where Dr Covey taught his timeless principles.

Success in MLM requires all 8 Habits - habit 8 being "Find your voice and inspire others to find theirs". Habit 6 "Synergise" is encapsulated with Habits 1 and 8 in Eric's vision statement for MLM: "There is a promised land and we can get there together" (Habit 1 being: Begin with the end in mind).

What I am also hearing is the importance of Habits 2 and 3 "Put first things first" and "Seek first to understand, then to be understood" - the latter relating to prospecting sensitively and the former relating to "showing the opportunity - 2 a day".

I love watching and contributing to NMPro every day - it's a great habit that is equivalent to keeping a journal but it also combines one of Dr Covey's other principles, which is to socially commit to a path of action in order to keep yourself to the discipline of carrying it out.

Ooops - best stop hogging the bandwidth and give someone else a bit (geddit?) or a byte?

    :-)
  • Lots of good points in here Brad. Total agree with you on Stephen Covey's book and leadership style. Another one of the best there is of course is the great John C. Maxwell writings.
  • Hans
I decide to develop myself into a great leader and to go Pro (again)...
  • Jury is out on that one. Maybe but in the main people pretty much early on if they want to be led or lead.
  • Stephen
Leaders are confident, they understand their material/subject matter cold, and they know that they know it. It might not be across the board, it may be in a narrow field. Anyone can become a leader when they get to that point.
  • I totally agree Eric!
I believe leaders are created but at the same time I believe that we are all born with the ability to create ourselves into leaders in what ever we do. I am so thankful for the network marketing industry for the great opportunity that exists within it for the average person to understand they can be a leader and then make it happen with great support and encouragement from many like yourself.
    Thanks again.
    Make it a great day!
    God Bless,

  • brianhepner
I believe some children are born with more ambition and that drive coupled with their innate talents or skill set allows them to develop more talents and "look like having the world's secret's figuired out". That is Natural Leadership...... I also believe that the leader's that had the most to learn are the best coach's. Anybody can become a leader because the real secret is Hard Work. All people looking for leader's will be mentored(lead) by the hard working.
  • I was having a conversation this week about people you bring into your deal. And I was told maybe that person might struggle in the business, but maybe that's exactly what they need right now. You have to decide where you are in relationship to if they will need your time or if you have automated training that will get them to where they need to be. I know for myself, I came into this profession not for the money but for what I would learn in the process.
  • Amazing point Justin. Thanks for sharing with us all.
I never thought of it that way.
    Make it a great day!
    God Bless,

  • Ya Ed,

Sometimes I joke that I'd never sponsor myself if I met me at the beginning of my network marketing career because of how many questions I asked. But, if that was the case I would have eventually missed out on a whole lot of income and more importantly helping that person transform.
  • I hear you Justin. I'm glad I did not wait until I liked me either!

SOME PEOPLE WAS BORN WITH THE POTENTIAL TO BE LEADERS, SOME NOT. BOTH HAVE TO GO THROUGH PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT TO BECOME GREAT LEADERS.
  • andreas papakostas

  • I think the Queen of England was ;-)

This is encouraging news as I have a way to go but I am determined to be all I have the Power to be and to do all I am destined to do. That is why I am here... for the count, and in this business for the long haul.
  • Eileen
I do believe I am a leader. I still feel I have MUCH to learn....
  • MarvinTowler
I believe that some people are born to lead. There are those, possibly like yourself Eric, who may not see the leadership qualities that are dormant inside awaiting activation. I believe that through personal development we can activate our potential, and there are some qualities that cannot be learned because they are innate. There is a definite skill set of leadership that anyone can learn.
  • Leaders are definitely made. Personal development is the key to becoming a leader. We need to consistently improve ourselves before we expect anyone else to follow.
  • Here is a great quote that is perfect for today's lesson.

"Contrary to the opinion of many people, leaders are not born. Leaders are made, and they are made by effort and hard work."

Vince Lombardi, 1913-1970, Professional football coach
  • Bryan_in_KC
I am living proof that leaders can be molded, shaped and (eventually) made. Months ago, I had NO leadership skills. I was the furthest thing from a leader that you could possibly imagine. It's not that I didn't want to lead.... I DIDN'T KNOW HOW to lead. I had NEVER been in a position of leadership and that was fine with me, but then I started getting involved in activities that touched me on a deeper level I was hopeful that perhaps one day I could take the lead in these activities. I didn't know where to start and didn't know how it could happen, all I know is that I wanted it to happen, but at the same time, I was scared to death that it WOULD happen and I would actually LEAD something! I am a Christian and as such began to pray that God would help me become a leader. He has been faithful and as I look back I see where He has placed me with certain people at certain times in order to provide the knowledge I needed for certain tasks. This has remained true with my network marketing business as well where I have great leadership doing, saying and recommending the right steps to improve and hone leadership skills. I can now say with great confidence that I CAN lead and CAN and WILL become a "better than average" if not great leader one day. There are many who will always be better leaders and thank God for them for they are the ones who mentor us to become the best leaders we can be.
  • susanclark
#234 - Leaders are MADE - I know we talk about finding leaders and not making them. But, bottomline, Eric believes leaders are made, not born. People develop leadership skills. That is what is so great about network marketing - our business is filled with average people who have learned to be leaders - that is where personal growth comes in. We need to develop ourselves into leaders.
  • "Leaders are also made and not just borne".......what a great business having so much focus on personal development to then give us the skills to all become great Leaders if we choose ! From my business back ground I have never seen such emphasis and personally think we are very priviledged to part of receiving this knowledge......
  • I think someone could grow up in an environment that gives them qualities of leadership earlier, but those were still learned. I've never seen a baby with charisma and leadership...they all drool, cry, and need to be fed and have their diapers changed by someone else....doesn't sound like they start out leading to me. If you find someone with leadership qualities they have developed them over time like everyone else.
  • onemartymac
I think it is a mixture but the two constants with successful leaders are:
#1 You need to want to be a leader
#2 you must constantly develop your leadership skills.

    Thanks for the great video
  • rasdaniels
Great Topic, I've enjoyed reading all the posts
  • Ken McRae
Yes, leaders are definitely made, but at the same time, there are also "natural-born" leaders; or those to whom the acquisition of "leadership" skill comes "naturally", or almost effortlessly. While Sherman does say that he "looks for leaders," rather than develops them, I think it would be reading too much into what he said for us to say that he is either down on self-development, or that he denies that leaders are made, as well as found.

When we view what Sherman said within the overall context, I think he was explaining how he became his Company's "Top Producer," as quickly as he did!! Now, within that light (or particular context), what he said was that he achieved that pre-eminent position, (within his Company,) not by waiting around for "average" networkers to develop themselves into leaders; but rather by finding "leaders," whether natural or made, who were ready to step into and assume a leadership role almost immediately, if not immediately, from day one.

We should be extremely careful not to "put words in his mouth," or attribute something to him that he did not say, either explicitly or implicitly. Anyone familiar with his MLM Company will know that it is very BIG on personal self-development as a crucial piece of the puzzle, or a key element of the science of success!! Once again, people want to know how Sherman became the Top Producer in his Company, and he simply said that it was by "finding" leaders rather than waiting around for "followers" to develop into leaders!!

I was a little surprised, at the time, that Eric did not spend a little bit more time on that particular issue with him, in order to clarify the matter further; rather than leave it where he did, which now appears to have caused a bit of confusion among the ranks. Do you want to become your Company's "Top Producer" in record time? If yes, then go out and "find" some leaders; rather than merely "wait" for your people to "develop" into leaders, which they will most certainly do, if they make a creative decision to "awaken the giant within!"

Now, having said all that, on a scale of 1-10, in terms of leadership skills, what kind of people would you rate as a 9 or 10? If we want to grow fast like Sherman, then we need to orient our thinking in this way. What roles or positions in life would you expect to finder leaders occupying? Think about it. What about corporate managers? Do you imagine that someone who is in charge of a few hundred people, in their 9-5 "job" might be a leader? or what about a self-employed conventional business owner, for example? Or what about a team coach? Or what about a former "politician"? Think about it? Where are all the leaders to be found? Now, go out and recruit a few!
  • rasdaniels
I see both sides of this coin; in our industry leaders are made.
  • m_cortez74
Leadership is made..... writh having the Right!!! Attitude to be One... :)
  • dougharkins
I am using all the personal development tools I can, to be a leader. You are one of those great tools.Thank's Eric.
  • rasdaniels
I like what you said about Eric being a tool for us. You're right.
  • Daniel W. Cook III
    #24
I believe leaders are made 1000% no one is a "born" a leader. You become a leader through experience and personal development and no one is "born" with either. You can find someone with leadership skills and sponsor them. Maybe they are a leader in a church or some other organization so they have some leadership qualities. These individuals are few and far in between and they are often very busy being a leader in whatever it is they are already a leader in. Which means it is often a long process to recruit them. It seems like there are more examples of people that became a leader due to developing in this profession.

p.s- and even if you find a person with leadership skills already, they still have to learn what it is to be a leader in this profession. I believe MLM demands a level of leadership that is very rare to find in other areas of business or life.
  • SJ Doug
Eric I think that we are going to see a lot of new leaders developing from a lot of different areas within Society in the next 10-20 years. History has shown us time and time again that great leaders arise from difficult times. It could very well be that Network Marketing could well be a focal point of some of the next generation of great leaders for our business of network marketing our communities & our country.

More good stuff Eric, thanks so much.

    Thanks again,
  • While I do believe that some leaders are born, I believe most leaders in our profession are made. Lots of people have charisma, that doesn't mean they are a leader. Lots of people can be leaders, they just don't know it yet.

Great video, Eric. Can't wait for our family to go on a trip to Australia, too!
  • I think some leaders have the natural ability but as you mentioned, others can learn to become leaders as well. Now, whether the ones with the natural abilities are more effective. . . maybe?

Or, perhaps the leaders that learn to be leaders also possessed the natural abilities they had just never challenged themselves before. I am not sure if I possess the natural abilities myself, but I am sure working hard at learning how to become a leader.
  • rasdaniels
I'm with you Dorene. I am also working hard to learn to become a leader.
  • seija
I think it is a mixture
  • daddykekere
Whether BORN Leaders or MADE Leaders, it is simply just amazing that both of them are able to accomplish the same goals. It means personal development makes for an even playing field. Thanks Eric for all you do.
  • billrogers
I personally feel that the desire and will must be their,. If one doesn't have it and is fortunate enough to have a mentor who will inspire and truly lead, then with personal development they can progress and become a leader themselves. Therefore I feel they are a mixture of the two.
  • tommycone
#234 I am working on my personal develoment and leadership skills. Thanks for all you do.
  • brigittapatel
I believe there are born leaders, but at the same time leadership can be developed.
    No excuses.....

    Thanks a million
  • janetrajala
Coming from a shy person's perspective, thanks for the encouragement that personal development and hard work will pay off.
  • Vange01
Eric, I agree leaders are made. For some people maybe it will be easier to become one based on their personalities but anyone can become a leader if they really have the desire to become one.
  • rasdaniels
I'm glad you mentioned the shy person's perspective. I've been fighting shyness my entire life and think that the more I educate myself and gain confidence; I too can become a leader in this industry.
  • TAbrams
Eric, I am glad you discussed this today and I agree with you. I think leaders can be found as I believe some people are born leaders and while you are sorting through people you will come across these individuals. However, as I have been building my business some of my top leaders have developed into that role.

I have business partners that if you had met them when they first entered this business you would not have wanted to be sponsored by them. Over the course of time, they worked tremendously hard of themselves, and were 100% coachable, enthusiastic and have an unbelievable work ethic. They have mastered different skill sets and continually are working on themselves in the areas that are lacking.

When you talk about personal development, many of them never went to college, but have got a better education in 12-20 months in our profession than could have ever been provided in school. If I am riding in the car with them they have coaching or "Jim Rohn" style mentorship audio on. They are always engaged with a different book and always at all events, training's, leadership sessions, and they will take any time they can get with other leaders and top talent from our industry.

The transformation of what someone can become in our profession is incredible...

It is about believing in YOU!!!
  • My short answer is leaders are made.

But I suppose it could be a mixture of both. Some have leadership ability in their DNA but I believe that even those who are “born leaders” would not be leaders with talent alone; they too would have to work on themselves and develop the skill set of a leader. So if there’s a learn-able skill set to become a leader then that would suggest that anyone who’s committed to do so can develop the skills to become a leader.
  • Is there a difference be tween Leaders and Leadership?

I believe there are people who are born to be leaders as part of their destiny. In our Network Marketing Profession leader ship skills can be taught and learned. Some will grow more quickly than others depends on their mindset.

    Bury the word can't !
  • pollyhulseman
It is people like you who give us that guidance to be made into leaders. I grow everyday - and one day I'll be able to teach others to be leaders.
  • Hey Partner,,, you already are... remember the lesson.. be then do
  • Marion
I believe that leaders are made, it just takes time for personal development, and belief in yourself.
It helps in your business when you can find prospects who have already worked on personal development & developed the skills to be a leader - Patience is a virtue!
  • quincy
I agree completely. Some are born with the talent to lead while others can learn it through personal development. If not, then why does John C. Maxwell have so many books on leadership. I believe more leaders were made leaders versus those born.
  • I believe that too, without personality development we don't have any success in our great industry, the fact that we will have this quality for cost free when we go in to this industry very deepily plus from reading books, attending company conferences, meetings, seminars and fundamentally from talking with different types of people in arround the world. Thank you Eric for your wonderful messages from Australia (My dream place), thank you very much and i love you............
  • Edith Kohler
I think leaders are made, especially in this business I guess
But some people become leaders more easily than others.
At what point in their life they are already, how other people see them already, coacheable (?)people etc.
  • Susan Peluso
I agree with you Eric that leaders are made. This gives us all hope that we can become leaders ,if were willing to do whatever we need to . Thank you for your leadership Eric.
  • kgoren
There are born leaders and then there are leaders that are made. Both are always reaching for their full potential through personal growth and development.
  • When you think about the four personality types, there are two that would seem to produce more leaders, because they are extraverts. But effective leadership has to be learned through experience.

Success in network marketing depends on your personal development. Compensation plans pay for marketing skills and leadership skills. So invest in your self education, so that you can help more people.
  • jlconner
I believe that people can be both great leaders and good followers. Sometimes we need to be a follower just as much as a leader. Leadership is developed as a person becomes more familiar with their product, business or anything else they are involved in. I am a good leader in some aspects and a good follower in others. Thanks Eric
  • rmonte
I think there are people that are born with personality traits that make them natural leaders, but even they need to develop themselves to become true leaders and that can only come through personal growth. I also believe that anyone with the desire can develop leadership skill to become a great leader themselves regardless of their DNA. Thanks Eric!

    Rick M
  • I think it can be one or the other or a combination of the two. Some people have natural talents and abilities in particular based on their environment and personality type that are conducive to a leadership role. But I believe that a person can improve in any area in which they feel deficient with enough determination and focus.
  • bryantkeefe
You are demonstrating great leadership right now. I am in my office, a bigger cubicle, and realizing I am not living anywhere close to my potential. You are irritating me, you are showing me what my life could be more of, you are leading me to be bigger. Keep the rock and roll on full tilt and I will see you at the top!
  • Hi Eric. I strongly believe that leaders are made. Som people have the possibility to become leaders at a very young age because of their environment, their parents or other circumstances, beacuse they LEARN how a leader acts. That's why some people seem like they're born leaders, because they live, talk and act like one. This is something they've learned some earlier than other. The sooner you learn how to become a leader and live like one, the better. Everyone has the opportunity and the possibility to become a leader, but not all take advantage of it. That's my opinion at least. Thanks Eric! /Linda, Sweden
  • Leaders are definitely made! There are people that say leaders are born, but those kind of leaders are not true leaders, because they tell people or do things that will only benefit "him" or "her" self. A true leader is someone that will show people or do things that will benefit others.
  • When I was a child, my friends looked at me as a leader, but I did not want to be the leader. And I never really developed leadership skills. Most times you do not select to become a leader. It just happens. But a real leader is made, not born, nor is he/she a leader because others say they are a leader. Real leaders are really hard to come by.
  • eabus
Leaders are BORN! that is the only way to come into the world...
    Now for real:
Ahhhh, this is a topic that has awlways challenged me.
This is the needed character trait I need to work the hardest on.
I am even surprised when my shadow follows me but it does not every time.
For sure there are people who looooove to tell others what to do since they can talk, even
when silence is a wiser option.
  • nickgarrison
You can be what you have the ability to and believe you can be. Leadership is one of them. Just like the saying "If I can't I am right. If I can I am right.
  • Bjorgli
Sure, you can learn to be a leader, but natural ability helps a lot.
  • carybennett
Good message, as possitive as i am i doubt my leadership sometimes especially lately since we are going through some tough times. Thanks Eric, Have a Blessed day
  • I feel like such a putz sometimes but I believe that I am the leader of a world-class organization. I'm just "in process". So are you just trust in the outcome, it's those exact "tough times" that you speak of that depending on how you deal with them, make you the leader that you're destined to be.
  • carybennett
Thank you Natalie for the words of wisdom and encouragement, so true, have a Blessed day
  • lopazelasane
I believe if someone has enough reasons they will do whatever just depends on there environment...
  • Mailen
I belives it is a mixture. I am not a born leader , but I am learning.
  • rayrios
This is life's Riddle. We see through history Self Proclaimed Learders, that forgot they came from a womb like every one else. I believe is the environment, the education, the upbring and most importantly Self Development that makes the leader who he/she may become. Thank you for making us stretch.
  • I think there are people who have a gift, We see it all the time in every aspect of life! Sports, politics, etc. I Do beleive that every people that have a gift and develop it (like being a born leader) can take his or her life to the next level and take off quicker than the rest. But I also beleive that you can take anything you want, and be anything you want although you might have to work a lot more to get there. It may take longer, but if it is what you want or need, it is worth the effort! Working to be a leader is a life experience!

Thanks Eric, and enjoy Hayman Island!
  • Erik
I agree that some people have a born talent to do something lets say play football. But even if you are a "born leader " or footballplayer, you still have to work extremely hard to develop the skills. Just the skills you are born with will never take you to the top level. So in my opinion leaders are made...
  • Exactly! and we are on our way aren´t we? =)
  • Erik
Yes we are :) The best of luck to you. Hope to see you at the top :)
  • Thanks Erik, the same to you! See you there!
  • Adam W
I believe there are people who have an innate ability to lead people; charismatic, decisive and strong of will. I also believe that this same trait exists in us all as a seed of possibility. We only need to nurture the seed and develop our leadership and we can be as successful as those who portray the innate quality.
  • Episode 25 of Eric Worre's 100 Episode Throw Down Challenge:

This is the classic Nature vs Nurture debate.. Born vs Made... Many leaders seem to have been born into leadership roles. Parents and mentors are a big reason for this. It also can not be emphasized enough that people rise to the level of expectations that their peers and leaders they follow set for them in addition to what that person has become at that point..

I see this weekends super bowl as a classic example of that.. Peyton Manning Vs Drew Brees.. Both are Great leaders... Peyton seemed to be born to be a Super Bowl Champion QB with his football pedigree .. Brees not as much.. Both are incredibly effective QBs and leaders of their teams. Both work their face off to be the best as well. Nature helps, but Nuture usually always wins..
  • Oh yeah... GO COLTS!

I firmly believe that the only thing you need to have to become a leader, is desire to become one, the so called burning desire. MLM is the perfect profession to become a leader with meany support and examples, good ones and bad ones.

From Puebla Mexico, I am Sergio Quintana MLM Pro.
  • ulla99
Pople who have som qualities will have advantages to become leaders: sensitivity, willing to learn of experiences, showing , not just talking and willing to be leader, for example.
  • gmeyerson
Eric, your helping me become a better leader, I have always been perceived as a leader, but now am feeling like a leader, it is moving from my head to my heart, my belief and confidence improve on a daily basis because of the steps I have put into place.
  • highimpact0406
I do agree with the fact that leaders are made, and they actually could be made even in their childhood, as they watch influential adult people around them as they grow up. Certainly, as adults they would be more apt to learn leadership, but some of the traits could be learned early on.
  • Steve_Nelson
I'm becoming a leader by "going pro" and being involved in this great community of people.
  • drmikempa
I have always been of the opinion that environmental factors are more important than DNA. I see it happen everyday.
  • Arnold Thompson
Awesome, that gives a lot of people hope to know that they too can become leaders if they work at it. This is one of the main reasons why I am going through the Jim Rohn 1 Year Success Plan. I want to become a leader and I can't wait to join you, Eric, in Australia some day soon.
  • I agree that most leaders are just born that way, yet may not even know that they have what it takes. We've been so programed in society to follow along with the flow that when someone empowers us, we're open to learning more about who we can really become. Thus, leaders are made through their desire of becoming a leader, knowing that it takes hard work and time to develop the skills.
  • tyroneholmes
We are always once choice away from changing our life.I believe that being a leader is a choice.
  • In actuality, becoming a leader in any profession is a DECISION! Leaders may be born with certain specific DNA, but largely they are made through hard work and dedication to consistent self improvement through books, seminars, courses, etc.

They have DECIDED that they will do the work and pay the price necessary to become a leader - a top 3%'er.

    Best to you,
    Scott
  • Paco_Carreno
I do strongly believe that this is a 90% skill development... The 10% is not really a matter of inner talent, but the inner impusle which drives us to commit with the "journey" of developing the skills set. So that 10% is what must be there in order to have the consistency, to persevere, and to look for our "why's to do it". Even this mnimum will improve thanks to the development ot the new skills... It's called sinergy. Anayway, by the time that sinergy is occuring we'll be en the 3 to 5 years of the formula 1-3-5-7 hahaha
  • DianaValdez
I was always told I'm a natural leader, funny enough, when it came to talk about my business I just shrunk because I am also shy. I think that the mix of personality can be crazy making. However, reading to all the self development books and the audios is such an amazing tool, it transforms you!
Thank G-D for the self development.
  • Connie Tolton
Thanks for the positive reinforcement that yes - there may be born leaders but all of us have the ability to become leaders when we work to become our own personal mentors. Learning how to develop ourselves is probably the hardest component in this process. Thanks for your continued support in helping others develop their leadership qualities.

  • Leaders are made in this industry.
  • bartar20
I believe we all have the ability to become leaders, but based on our surroundings and circumstances that unfold around us and shape our confidence levels we might not get the opportunity to be mentored or learn how to become a leader, yes some come by it naturally but for the majority of us, if we are willing this business will allow us to become a person that people would love to follow and look up to. Great insight Eric, thanks!!
  • dstfa96
Leaders can be made! Our profession is filled with people who have learned how to become leaders. As we continue on this journey to financial freedom and we work on personal development we will obtain the skills necessary to be Leaders!
  • krisic
I think some people are born with stronger personalities which may make becoming a leader easier, but alot of leaders choose to learn everything they can to equip themselves with leadership skills. I'm the latter of the two. I am reading books, watching these videos, listening to CD's, etc. I truly believe we do have a better way.
  • I am working on this quality all the time. I just need to figure out how to help the people in my organization work on doing the same. I definately have a long way to go but I am continuing my personal development daily.
  • Everyone starts somewhere. The destination is "Leader".
  • I hope the camera person didn't get seasick. haha
I think some people are born Leaders while others (like me) need to be taught how to be a Leader.
But then, maybe some have always had the "Leader" in them but never knew it until they've learned and have used what they've learned...to be a Leader.
  • BetterCoffee.dk
Eric, you're right in your statement that leaders are made not born, but.

What Sherman was alluding to, I think, was that we can find people who have the leader abilities already but are not in NM. If I can find 4 people who have the toolbox and are ready to go build a NM business, my business will grow at 10 times the regular speed.
That's why I look for that kind of people.
Like the instructions on airplanes to first put on your own oxygen mask before helping others, I believe that I should spend time building my own strong business with some strong people before I begin to help those who need to learn everything slowly step by step.
That way I come from a position of strength where I can be of service to those who need more help.
If I'm struggling to get my business off the ground because I started out with 4 people who are at my level or lower, I cannot help these people very much and so we will all take a long time learning before we eventually fly.
In a binary system I believe everybody should be helping and teaching and training people who are not directly below them but 2 or 3 levels down.
  • gillym1
Leaders 'emerge' when their talents have been honed by their journey through life! The desire to be all that you can makes you step out of the comfort zone and develop strategies and strength of character which, repeated often enough, develops the qualities of leadership!

Thanks Eric - you make learning so much fun!

    Leaders are made!
  • nikomachi
This is a very interesting topic. Not everybody can be a leader. I believe each person has a particular talent that they are born with. This talent can either stays dormant (which is mostly the case) or it is nurtured and those people thrive as they seems to have found their "calling".

The problem with today's society is that everyone wants to be a leader because the leader gets the recognition. They are the person that stands out even though most of the work could have been done by the "worker bees". I think there is as much importance in being a leader as there is in being a worker bee. It is a complimentary relationship where the one does not exist without the other.

Yes we can learn leadership qualities and be better at leading but a great leader is one that is born with such a talent and has nurtured this talent to bring it out to the world.
  • gmuhammad
    Thanks Eric
  • MattinJaxfl
I believe that Leaders are made. However, some of those leaders are made by their parents and others have to learn it on their own later in life.
  • Lorraine
I agree that the answer is both. I believe that while there are those that are born with the gift, the majority of the leaders are made.
  • Hard work makes leaders. Good think Eric has hair like me! Windy words today for sure.
  • Nancy Eldred
    My answer is .... BOTH
    ..................................................................................................................................................
    #1 - Leaders are Born
#2 - The Followers that become Leaders. When we are told by the right people that have that CAN DO attitude and belief in themselves and pass it on to others.
    ....................................................................................................................................................
Who we surround ourselves with and associate with is HUGE !!! It's how we value ourselves and others. All this personal development stuff is .. absolutely .. Brilliant !!!
  • Jillian
Well I really need to believe you can make a leader as well as having those with some born leadership skills that need to be honed. I think you can awaken a "sleeping giant" with personal development because once the belief kicks in then you can conquer the highest mountain.
  • Denise Cox
hearing this made me think of a gal on the team who is so clearly a leader, but who doesn't see herself that way. i don't want to give up on her, and there's a need to move on as well. come to think of it, there are three people direct to me that are that way.

are they the mirror? do i need to take responsibility here?
  • Great message. Develop yourself into a leader. Everyone that desires to can do it.
  • fc34615
Kevin Hall, author of the great book, "Aspire" provides us with the origin of the word leader: Lea: Path Der: Finder. What a beautiful definition, a leader is that person capable of finding the path that will lead other people into better pastures.
    Thanks, Eric.
    Best,
    Fernando.
  • carolbarrett
I believe that most leaders are made. If I didn't believe this I wouldn't be in the business because right now I do not have the leadership capabilities. I am learning through personal development and I will get there.
  • carolbarrett
I believe that most leaders are made. If I didn't believe this I wouldn't be in the business because right now I do not have the leadership capabilities. I am learning through personal development and I will get there.
  • anthonyviglietta
It's good to know. I think it's probably easier to find people who have the WILL to become a leader, instead of trying to only find born leaders.
  • Based on 3 decades of NM observation, I believe that leaders can be developed WHEN they understand the importance of personal development and consequently take responsibility for learning the skills of a leader. That said, some people have a personality that makes it distasteful for them to tell other people/suggest to other people, "You really need to do XYZ". Where XYZ might be to do whatever it takes to attend a big event for their company.

What is the highlight of a cannibal wedding?

This is great. So many start out saying that I can't do this, I'm not "that kind of person". We all have the potential within us, just some of us need help to develop it. Thanks.
  • theuns
Eric I agree 100% with you a leader is born in the mind and if you do not develop it it will stay dormant and the only place you will met that leader in you is on your death bed , and the words you will hear is " I come hear with you to eath to make you a leader but you did not want be one now i must die with you.".... I dont want to hear that one day :-)

" If you think you are a leader and have no followers you only went for a walk " :-)
  • germanjaramillo
The question is: Do I want to be a leader? If i want, i have to do some important things to get there. For example, it is very importan to understand how is a leader, what leaders do, etc. For this i think the best way is to begin reading books and listen audios about that.

Jhon Maxwell is a good author to study in this item.

    From Bogota, today,

Yes, I think is a mix of both. We all are born with a "leader inside". It takes discipline and work to give it a voice and let it express it self.

As a community, we'll be in a better place when everyone decide to step up and express his/her full potential as a leader. As Seth Godin would say, "we need you to lead us"
  • hlj521
I think there is a great leader in each one of us...the trick is to find it, believe it then apply it. The other part is to then get someone else to find it, believe it and then apply it.

you can develop and learn to be a leader, however 1 of the qualities of a leader is to have some courage. That is what we can look for; people who have the courage to start, but also have the courage to continue their business and develop themselves. You can recognize them within their first month. maybe even before, in their former surroundings... BUT, do we all need to be leaders? some people just want to earn a few bucks without too much exposure on themselves. That kind of people might just use the real leaders in their advantage and also will bring turnover.
  • jeffreyhall
It appears that most people have leadership in them. For what ever reason, in some it is just buried very deeply. In many if not most cases it takes a little support, some successes and encouragement to get it started. Then if the person wants it they have to actually make it happen. This is again a situation where the individual has to have the desire to bring their leadership skills to the forefront to develop through all of the possible personal development programs that are present.
  • It's not what I think about becoming a leader by nature or not. It's a fact that it takes about 10.000 hours of hard consistent work to be a professional in any industry around the world. Thanks Mr. Worre for taking care of those long and lasting hours, with so much pleasure. Best regards from your biggest fan.
  • You can be born a leader and lose the skill. You can become a leader and gain the skill. Both by continual learning. You are looking for people who WANT to become leaders.
  • Tina Perdue
That is good news..because it would be harder still if we could only look for born leaders.
  • I believe that we set an intention before we arrived here in our physical body and from that desire we reach a point in life when we (re)discover our intention intuitively and we work on us to align to that desire for bigger, better, more fulfilling contributing thing. (I know that we live our life according to our beliefs and that any belief is not true it's just a way of looking at things and we can change our "glasses" through we look into the world).
So i believe it is a mix of both(born potential and personal becoming), but without personal development or a strong knowing of who you are and what you desire to do on this planet you can't become a leader because you don't have anything to offer to the people around you(no expectation of increase) so they find you attractive and partner up with you.
You first look for already mature leaders and you also assist anyone who shows you leadership potential.

I liked a quote from Randy Gage(i'm paraphrasing):"The world's beaches is filled with the dust of dead people trying to build a business on potential."

    Alex Tita
    Here as promised.
  • This is a good message for self belief that you or I can make it.
  • It's true that upbringing and positive programming from an early age may make it easier, but anyone can develop the skills if they want to. It's a case of (as Jim said) working harder on yourself than you do on your business.

I once heard of a guy who was a dish washer in Mr C's pancake house in Madison Wisconsin, and he did ok. If he can, we can :-)

    Mark
  • Eric ! I belive this - some leaders are born, some leaders are made.

Some of us have the natural ability to lead and show people the past, be everyone....well allmost everyone anyway can learn to be a leader - and no matter how you turn it - GOOD LEADERS, are ALLWAYS made !!! Because a leader who do not develop himself/herself is worthless !
  • soxfan071
Yes, I think if you have the strong desire to win you will seek the training you need. You can't make it to the top if you don't become a leader. Everyone wants to learn from a leader that has done what it takes and not someone who talks about what it takes. You can learn to lead.
  • tomlacey
An interesting position which flys in the face of soo much of convential teachings. I agree that personal development will bring the leader out of most people except the inherently interverted. Great thought for the day.
  • wouterdeprez
    what's a leader actually?
  • Someone who knows where he's going, and that people want to follow there.
  • well said
  • donham298
You certainly are a leader. I do believe that we all have the possibility of becoming
    a leader.
  • drpricedc
I think we all have the potential of leadership in us. I think we all have the personal strength and personal power to develope ourselves in a way that we can lead by example. It all depends on if we have the desire and the passion to dig deep and do the very things that we dont want to do, every day, to become and be who we want to be.
  • Ergün Franko
    True That.
I think there are Neutral Born leaders, for Example; a child from a Leader. But you still have to lead the way for that child.

For the ones that are not in that position they just have to work harder for it.

So my answer is its a mixture.
  • patrickmcfeely
Some people are born to be leaders, others like cream will allways come to the top.

Thank you for your time Eric
  • goingpro
As I progress each day in this journey, i realize that it will only be a matter of time that I will be able to lead a large group of people, to do a few simple things, over a consistent period of time. There is no doubt that leaders are MADE and not born...It goes back to that old of adage of where there's a will, there's a way.
The first step is to DECIDE and keep progressing in that positive direction.
  • Lisette
Leaders are made in my opinion.
Because, if you decide to be a leader...you are going to be one.
Life is about learning, from the start to the end. So you have to want to be a leader.
You must get over the obstacles, your own thoughts about yourself, what you are and what you can do.
It´s all about me and my thoughts.
    I´s time for the reprogamming.
  • Vange01
I agree 100% with you, it is time to re program and decide to become a Leader.
  • hillin
Leader is the cool word of the moement. We can hear it a bit everywhere and in every show. My opinion is that the word leader is often missused. I advise people to listen to the audiobook from Mr Jim Rohn : Cultivating An Unshakable Character; to have a better understanding. Best regards to all.
  • clickjt
I think it is a combination of both. Some people definitely have a penchant for leading because their personalities work that way. Other people are able to find something within themselves when they are exposed to experiences that bring those things out in them. There is a saying that goes something like this..."I didn't know I had it in me."
A good leader who knows how to be a professional network marketer will be able to develop the leadership abilities in other people.
  • I agree that leaders can be made. I think it all starts with what you are taught as a child. We parents need to teach our children all the basics, right from wrong, ethics, honesty and a host of other qualities that a true leader will have in the future.

Leadership training starts at a very early age - in my humble opinion.
  • MagnusEdvald
As with so many things in life the answer is not yes or no. The matter can not be described as black or white. Some people are born with some qualities that help them to be a good leader, other develop some skills and behavior to be a leader early in life, for other it takes longer and for some it is a challenge to be a leader. So even though you are born with great charisma and qualities that can make you a great leader you are not born as a great leader. It might be easier for you than someone else to become a great leader. Leaders not born and great leaders are not made from nothing either. My view is that everyone can become so much better by developing him or her self. "The day you no longer want to be better you stop being good".

When have you been in the hospital and heard the Doctor say at the birth of a kid, "It's a Leader.", They always say "It's a Boy", or "It's a Girl!". So I would have to say Leaders are made. Now Some maybe farther along in that process than others, giving the impression/idea that leaders are found. Yet either way they have to learn some (even if it is only the details of your company does business or it's products). Now that brings in the Major Factor of how TEACHABLE people are. The more Teachable people are the faster they can become a great leader!

I think leaders are both made and born. They are born to be leaders and that's why they can be educated, patient, and faith…. Then, they will be made based on that. People who doubt for everything cannot be a leader. They are not born to be leaders. One important thing is that people themselves are the one who decide to be a born and made leader or not.

    Hello Eric.
I agree with what you say.
But to find the beginning of the business leaders, it helps to start the business better and faster.
Have become leaders by showing formula 1-3-5-7.
Become a leader everyone can do. The question of what you choose?
I choose to be a leader.
Interpretation of AGAL Hebrew "אגל"- I'm proud to lead
I am proud to lead a winning team that creates wealth and economic freedom and distributes a line of health and happiness to the world
  • I think, leaders are made.

Agree with you Eric! If we had in our profession only born leaders than it would be also some way limited!
Because we can make leaders, because we can develop ourselves, because we can build everyday, then we have all the possibility to succeed!
Of course it is always good to recruit a born leaders but that is on a lower average than the leaders that we build
    Tks

I think it is a mixture of the two .. leaders are born and leaders are made. A born leader who wants to take it to the next level should develop his/her skills constantly to become better. There is so much to learn! A self-made leader knows that fact and it is a number one priority in his/her life.
When we say that ours is a profession of teaching and leadership that also means endless personal growth and self-development.
    Great topic, thank you Eric.

I think it´s a mixture. Where you came from and the skills you are learning.
But the biggest parameter I think is if you are interested in learning and using all the tools out there waiting for you.

I am sure leaders can be made...it's up to you if you are going to develop the skills...
I am working on it really hard and every day I'm growing and learning, it's a great feeling!!

I say leaders are made. You become what you think, you become what you working hard to be. You have to work hard on everything to become a leader in my oppinion :)
  • Natural ability can only take you so far. Like muscle you must continually work on your skills or suffer atrophy. Leaders must always stay sharp and can be made.
