Harvey Mackay is a multi-millionaire, superstar businessman, syndicated columnist, #1 New York Times Best Selling author and friend.  But even better than that, in my opinion he’s one of the greatest “Networkers” of all time.  If you want to build your list, build your influence, build your brand and more… he’s your guy.  I’m very happy to have him share his thoughts to our community.  The entire interview was over an hour long.  That will air later.  For this week, you’ll be able to see five amazing excerpts.  Imagine what will happen when you apply the discipline he learned at age 18!

  • It really is amazing. I started to think about this when I saw one of your shows and you told us to go out and buy a brand new book to start writing names of people we interact with...
    And now to see the real value of it, of interacting with people and create relationships. It is incredible the power of association.

I have always found it difficult staying in touch with other people, i.e. old co-workers, neighbors, etc. I guess I need to go buy some of Harvey's books.

    I have not read his book yet. Will pick it up but it seems very much along the principles of Bob Burg's Endless Referrals. Where he gives you how to's in keeping in contact with the people you meeting and using a notecard with your photo on it anytime you send something even if it is just an article that would be of value to your contact.

  • Wow! "Super" contacts- interaction AND personal relationship with each, find ways to create value with each of them. It's more than a "numbers game".
    I started making personal notes of the interractions and now this reinforces that is a good thing to do.
  • Harvey's dad to Harvey at age 18 - Every person you meet whose business card you get, put the card in a rolodex and "Find a creative way to keep in touch with that person". 12,800 names he keeps in touch with in a creative way, wow what a powerful network of friends. This shows the importance of building relationships - - not just contacts.

    I loved the part about "extrapolated contacts" or friends of friends. It was important enough information for his father to pass on to him at age eighteen, it is important enough for us to take to heart today.

    A quote I remember from childhood that has stood out to me from one of my all time favourite movies, the Wizard of Oz. Oz said, " A man is judged not by how much he loves but by how much he is loved by others".

    I really like the distinction that Harvey and Eric are making about having developed a real network of people that know me and I build relationships with as opposed to the superficial name from someone from facebook and twitter. The question for me is how to continue developing meaningful, real relationships that can be of value. Is it only done face to face or can it be done with our new technology?

    Relationships are key. They have to be maintained. As you stated "real-life interactions, are what created value with". I was taught long ago to always write on the back of a business card something about the person you just met - so you could build an association with that person in the follow-up and begin to establish a relationship with.

    Just as Robert Kiyosaki says: "The Rich Build Networks" !!!!!

    WOW! I bought the book "Swim with sharks...", TWICE! I guess I should have read it when I bought it and DONE the contact list and data Then! Sometimes I guess I have to be hit over the head a few times to listen... I get it NOW! I am starting that list now!...

    Any ideas on the best method(s) to do this? Paper, or electronic, or combination of the two?

  • One of the most phenomenal ways I know to keep in touch with everyone you meet is with the system that I market. I send out at least one custom greeting card to someone everyday and someone a gift each week. Everyone I meet goes in to this contact list with notes and birthdays. The system automatically reminds me of birthdays and anniversaries. I can add my own signature and photos. It is also the best follow up tool I know of. Click on the link by my photo if you want to check it out.

    #246 - Harvey MacKay Interview 1 of 5 - Eric credited him with being the greatest networker. Harvey said that he was taught to keep in touch with everyone he ever met. That coupled with all the people that those people know makes the amount of people that he knows absolutely astounding. My resolve is that from this point forward, keep track of everyone I meet.

    Absolutely on time interview for me ... I have heard Harvey say this before and a good friend of mine once said that for everyone you meet you should send them a postcard and send them once every month or quarter JUST to stay in touch. But it must be HANDwritten not emailed. That's the key.

    Build your list of contacts, document as you go along. So many times, we hear, I don't know anyone, and that is so not true. I truly believe if you want success in this business, you must WANT to do what you need to do. Regardless of circumstance, it requires your attention and hard work.

    WOW, I wish I had know that at 18. But now I have this information for future use.
  • You know what Eric...time and time again..you validate the true meaning of networking. That REAL connection with people--face to face, in real life. It's true. Those real connections that Harvey has are more valuable because they're more personal. It's difficult to compare to people talking in person and laughing to a chat online. It's hard to replace that. At first, I thought people could do that but the reality is...even when you meet someone online...everyone should meet them in person--whether locally or nationally. It has to be done in some point in time. If only I had kept and stay in touch with ALL of the contacts that I have made over time, I would be in a much different situation now.

    I have a collection of business cards & know nothing about the person who gave it to me, which is sad. Going forward I will make sure to make a notation on each card & give each card the importance by putting them into a roll a dex & not just throwing them into a drawer to be forgotten.

  • I have read a couple of Mr. Mackay's books and found them fascinating. Hard part for me is keeping contact. Amazing how, when I look back to the past, it seems it was easier to stay in contact with a person via a letter or a phone call. Now with email and text messages if you do not hear back from someone within minutes you tend to brush them off or not consider them friends anymore. How sad. I am also subscribed to Mr. Mackay's newsletter. A lot of very useful information.

    I met Mr. Harvey in my early 20s at a National Speaking Association in Dallas and I had no clue who he was but that I just met a nice , friendly and down to earth guy who said hello to me.
    Wished I had his autograph now... :-) Will take good notes, 20 years later..ha

  • This is what I've come to learn... facebook and other social networks are about quantity (I don't know how I got over 1400 facebook friends and 600 twitter followers) while the phone, and to a slightly less extent, e-mail enable quality relationships.
    My personal strategy is to move people from my facebook friend list to phone and e-mail contacts, making them a "real person" rather than "a face and a name" :-)

    What an interesting interview and man. I keep a "networking" binder, which has business cards and brochures from people I have met in different businesses and industries. I use it to refer one to another and connect people who would have otherwise not met. Looking forward to the rest of the interviews with Harvey. This was great.

    Wow! I really got impressed! That's a discipline which turned into a habit which turned into a treasure.

    I really hope to understand some examples of how he noursih as many contacts. I mean... Plus than 12,000 people... if we do the math is close to 40 contacts A DAY to interact with (and think that it would be a once-in-a-year call or meeting). So I publicly show my admiration for such a great Networker.

    Very interesting idea. I am curious about how to keep in contact with all of these people creatively. I really like the idea of having a network of contacts before you need them. I wish that I had started this a long time ago, I can look back on my past and see a lot of networking opprotunities that I have missed out on. Definately need to get his books and study his techniques.

    His stories and suggestions are the penultimate read for anyone in Network marketing; no make that MARKETING ... period. In swim with the sharks, Harvey tells the story about a negotiation during the formation of a International Soccer League where at the last moment, one of the owners representatives withdraws his marker, choosing not to participate as the deal was no longer to his liking. That one story, read many years ago, has influenced me more than any other suggestion I have ever read. It was foundational in forming my belief that it is essential to follow my gut and having the confidence to walk away from a deal that is no longer in my best interest. I look forward to the whole interview. Thanks for bringing this living legend to Network Marketing Pro!
