NMPRO #303 – Leadership Part 4 – Competence

In the movie Braveheart, the Mel Gibson character wouldn’t have been much of a leader if he charged into the first battle and got killed.  Today, we talk about learning while doing and developing competence in building your MLM business.  And, at the end of the show, I take you on a lap around the track in the Pace Car (It’s much faster than it looks on screen!)

    When a child must learn to ride a bicycle, it overturn plenty of times in the beginning. A little later the child keep running, but in an erratic path that looks dangerously out. Eventually, the child - almost unconsciously - taught himself to keep the bike and body at rest. A person who once learned to ride a bicycle will never forget it, even if there are long periods when the person does not bicycles.

    Learning by doing- I didn't know there was another way. In order to excel at any skill you have to do it many times over every time getting a little better.
  • This weekend I stepped out of my comfort zone to develop some muscle memory that increased confidence and competence. I can draw on that success each time I need it from now on.

  • Compitence is gained by having doing it before..and doing it again and again until the experience is natural. Of course, it helps to be practicing the "right" thing, whether it be the skills of NWM, sports, arts, mathematics, technical, or navigating the turns at the Charlotte Morot Spedway at hight speed.

    I think the cousin is confidence. I have come to learn that my Uncle, who I thought could "fix anything" actually approached the problem with a successful attitude and kept trying things until one worked. He may not have known, in the beginning, what the right sequence/process was, but knew he would succeed in the end. So he kept at it with a positive atitude until he got it, then taught us.

    Compitence at a particular skillset cyles up into confidence in doing, cycles up into learning-by-doing, cycles up into more compitence.

    Winners circle is when you are surrounded by people that you have helped or have helped you be successful. Leaders are sometimes the student; but that is a result of being a good leader and listening to your team. So, yes leadership is a circle in a team so that all are supported when they need it and move forward even when things happen that others would consider detrimental from their perspective.

  • Developing your skill sets will increase your confidence level and ultimately result in being a better leader. Much like in racing, its all about the seat time. The more time you spend doing your craft, the better you become at it.
  • Good point. Horation Nelson ended up with quite a few battle scars (and a missing arm) during his leadership tenure but I imagine his resilience encouraged people to believe he was a kind of talisman.

    The ability to build competence in the team is perhaps equally or more important than having the competence oneself - Nelson didn't need to be better than his men at operating the guns but he did need to understand that a faster rate of fire was essential and be able to get his crew to drill until they had a considerably higher rate (double speed) when compared to the enemy.

    I imagine this tenure gave gravitas to his commands - he'd been in the Navy since he was a child and had commanded successfully in various battles before Trafalgar.

    Fascinating stuff - I look forward to exploring this leadership theme over the coming weeks.

  • Eric, One thing I think a lot of us forget when we start in Network Marketing is how we learned what we did or do at our job. Slowly over time we became better and better until we become/became pros. Now we need to do the same thing here in Network Marketing until we become pros. However the time frame can become condensed by being mentored by leaders like you.

    It´s like telling some about MOMENTUM, it is not the same as to really experience it LIVE.

    Leading by example. We all want to follow someone who is not only competent but stands out of the crowd.

  • Experience is the only teacher some say. I have found that the best teaching experience is a function of failing. Learning to ride a bicycle is not going to happen reading the encyclopedia on bicycle riding. Watching the six DVD course on the 4 easy steps to bicycle riding will not produce anyone riding a bicycle.

    You have to actually get on the bicycle and fail a number of times until you discover balance. There is a certain way people are about riding before they ‘get it’ and for some there is a lot of drama while others go to work. Some appear to find balance quickly and others need weeks of training wheels.

    Once you ‘learn’ to ride a number of things happen almost instantly. You forget everything you had to do to get there and are completely unable to explain to anyone who doesn’t know how to ride how you got there. Explanations lack power. You may abstain from riding a dozen years and you will ‘know’ how to ride immediately. You cannot unlearn how to ride the bicycle. Be careful of what you choose to become competent in. Discovering balance on a bicycle doesn’t appear to translate to surf boards, skiing, skate boards or any other kind of balancing act. Each one requires its ‘learning’ [failing] experience. Becoming a world class bicycle rider is decades and hours per day of riding. Competence is not a onetime event.
  • Competence and Confidence. The education you provide here gives up competence and when applied gives confidence, you are right! We have a better way, and when we Go Pro we can help others feel more confident with this awesome profession!

  • Can you imagine following a person with no athletic ability to lead your sports team? Or following a person with little intelligence to lead you through a complicated problem solving exercise? Your followers have to believe in your abilities to lead the team to success.

    In our industry, anyone can join. How can you develop competence in something that is completely foreign to you? You follow a proven system that others have had success in. As you are taking action building your business, you are constantly learning things about our industry, your company and products, and about yourself through personal development.

    As your team sees you taking positive action, your competence as a leader will grow. See you in the winner's circle!

I recommend to m y folks Eric's Plan-DO-Review approach to our business of referral marketing and in many ways just to have some success in life in general its a good idea to PLAN-DO-REVIEW. The review part allows us to tweak things a bit and redirect ourselves to what worked and what didn't for higher conversions next time...thanks ERIC!

    I usually ask within my team: "Do you know anybody who learned how to ride a bycicle by reading a book or watching a video?" - You know you have to fell down a few times (some of the falls are quite impresive... ok) but at the end... Do you know much people who after the learning period still without knowing how to ride the bycicle? - We must admit not many people fail on that task which has been just a matter of conscious practice with the strong determination of trying (at least) to improve from one attempt to the other

    Let's do the same with our Network Marketing bycicle... So by learning from the basics, learning with feet on the field... we can develop true inspiring leadership. By the way, that's something I really look up to you my friend Eric, you are a Network Marketing Professional who is ACTIVE on the field.
  • Good point Paco - the leader has to have some skin in the game and be involved to earn and inspire respect. It's less powerful to issue commands from an ivory tower miles back from the front line than it is to be seen rolling up your sleeves alongside the field troops and experiencing (as well as having experienced) what they are experiencing every day.

    My observation is that most of the people I see or meet that are successful in MLM have been at it a very long time and are still actively recruiting - it's less credible when they stop because it gives people the excuse that "it was different for you - things have changed".

    Competence is critical for your success. Gathering the skill-sets over time within a team that cares. The formula is, learn a bit, do a bit, learn a bit do a bit, or to put it bluntly get off your arse, get out of your comfort zone and enjoy the experience. I guarantee it it will not be as bad as you think it is going to be. The worst that can happen is that the other person will say no. Next.

    Learned Competence.
    Am adjusting my vision, my goals, targeting the winner’s circle.
    Leaders can, it has been proven, learn on the job. It must come as a bit of a shock to people who become successful but who did not really understand how they did it, how they got there. I aim to know how I got there but it is definitely time for me to get out there and do what I have learned, to deliver against my dreams, to practice more, to teach why, how and what to do, proving that we have a better way.

    Wow – cool run around the circuit. In UK Eric would have been driving (right hand drive) – not a good idea to film, talk and drive at the same time, yet I am sure Eric could, with practice, do it. Race drivers talk all the time to their guys in the pits. We need to talk all the time we can commit to our guys who are also in the pits, so that they can get out there, onto the race track, find and live that better way. Support, support, support.

    It's just as when you by a car... there's no use trying to get it to move if you don't know how to drive it...
    First you take lessons, then you do it and then you get better at it... and if you get really good at it you can win the race!
    The car won't move if you don't start the engine :)
  • That´s one of the core ideas with our profession; learning by doing. You don´t have to study 4 years to go out and recruit somebody. It does however take you daily disciplines in personal development to become more attractive as a leader.
