  • Growing and nurturing to survive the distractions to ensure a good crop.

Summer: Fertlising the plants: protecting them from the pest (distraction) : A good defence is a fast offence.
  • ronaldvandomburg
so many distractins possible... Act fast and act decisevly
  • CarlosVera
Stay focused and alert to detect weed in order to get rid of it right away, and make sure everybody else is doing the same thing!!.............
  • Timea Dani
If you want to keep negatives you must be strong and belife your self. A good selfconfidence is very imortat to eliminating the negative people around you.
  • Cliff Lapenskie
There are many many distraction and perils along our journey and we as leaders definitely need to be protecting our flock and communicating these potential threats.
  • Always great tips
    1. Preparation 2. Recognising when negativity shows up and protecting your team 3. Training your team and letting them know how to survive.
  • Talya Mitzafon
The seasons of the year - interesting concept.
  • This is something that could be really hard to deal with, and where you need good leadership. But if you maintain your group healthy, it will be really nice to work there....
  • Susan Johannesson
I like the comparison with the seasons because it makes me feel secure about that my hard work and my beliefs will pay off eventually.
  • You have to protect you organization... One way is in the begining is to prospect people that are positive, have a good attitude, coachable and teachable
  • When "summer" comes, you need to keep defense from all distractions :)
  • Agneta Rebo
I like having different "pictures" to show/understand how the business works. Seasons is a great one.
  • Thank you, Eric for using the seasons to compare to our business. Summer, a time for nurturing, protecting, and caring for the "crop" (associates) is so right on target. This is the time to help our people with self-development books, cd's, seminars and courses. We grow ourselves to be the person we need to be to accomplish our dreams and purpose.
  • mrmauriocrawford
Great post. This "seasons" series us uncanny. Really opening my mind to the possibilities of what could happen, either good or bad in my organization at any given time. I really love the part about reacting HARSHLY IF NEEDED. Man, you don't get this stuff anywhere in the network marketing training arena. Thanks for NMPRO!
  • A man for all seasons....good analogies
  • Futrarchitek
Nothing kills momentum more than distractions and negativity and my wife and I do our best to be in the presents of positive motivated people.
  • TAbrams
Great message and just as in any business you need to stay focused on the longer term and keep any and all distractions away. I believe the best way to keep everyone on track and from being distracted is to provide and ensure that you have a system in place to train, and educate and mentor our teams.

I have seen great success when anyone stays plugged into the system provide and follows it. Distractions become less relevant when people are plugged in and continually working on themselves and their business.

Distractions become also minimized when playing team is stepped up and friendships / relationships are being built. We do this in the summer months through team building events, functions that involve everyone and their families and through training events that are fun and keep everyone on track and together through the summer months.

People are less likely to quit on a friendship than on a business...

Become a great "gardener" and pull any and all weeds out by their roots day 1 as you first spot them.
  • Great show as always.
  • Whoa... I am officially paranoid now. Not just about looking for weeds, but being seen as one too.

    How can you protect growth?
by acting fast& having good preperation& training.
Don't let the summer weeds have a chance to grow. Nip them in the bud!
  • Miguel Cortez
A perfect way to keep the garden Clean of weeds... :)
  • Very hard to stay away from the "distractions". Totally agree with you today Eric. Good stuff. Have to remember to stay "focused" ; "focused"!!
  • James Gilliam
    Distractions are tough !
  • Weeding is simply part of caring about you and the team.
  • This is an ongoing issue. I have learned to walk with blinders on. I try to encourage those in my organization to stay away from get rich quick schemes. There are too many individuals pushing false methods. These individuals never ask what type of product or service you offer, all they want to do is lace their own pocket. I love this analogy. The season of change will eventually breed a harvest.
  • NANCY Eldred
So many important lessons and reminders in today's show.
Sometimes a weed looks like a flower at first then over time it shows it's true self - just like people.

Cheers .. to the Summer of 2010 ...
May it be happy healthy successful and exciting for all of us
  • Any good gardener knows it easier to pull weeds when they are small. If left to fester & gain deeper roots, then you have more work & sometimes have to bring out heavy artillery tools like weed killer! Be a good leader from the start sowing the good seeds early & get the bad seeds out so they can flourish.
  • All distractions are equal...eliminate them!
  • Mark_Abrahams_UK
Am playing catch up to maintain the right mindset, tuning in as I travel.
So 'Protect & Defend My MLM Organization' (358); Opportunuty Knocks' (357); and 'Handling the Tough Times' (356) will all be added to my library, including the one in my head. This as all great information and leadership.
    Thanks again Eric

(from Australia, Queensland - The Sunshine Coast, Cairns airport - next stop on our journey is Auckland, NZ. What a wonderful thing is life, our potential, what we can learn and who we can trust, listen to and so become, do and have so much more. By enjoying the journey, by becoming better, by finding creative solutions and by doing what is proven to work, aiming to lead the way and copy what we have learned from great leaders, we can repeat the success we seek. Today, I am yet one more step forward - not letting distractions get in the way of my values and goals).
  • sjwilliamson
Really appreciate the comparsion of the seasons. Makes it very clear
  • BetterCoffee.dk

I need to grow my organisation (into an actual organisation) so I can really take advantage of your wisdom!
I understand what you're saying, but so far have no use for it.
  • pollyhulseman
I am really liking the analogy that you are making of the seasons and networkmarketing.
  • talya_mitzafon
A great lesson in leadership. Once you built an organization you have to become a leader. Thank you Eric for the lesson.
  • margarethockaday
Wow, I was just telling someone that I would not let distractions get in my way of reaching goals. Prepare yourself.
  • MarvinTowler
You make some very powerful points today Eric. Thanks so much for this great analogy of life/business.
  • Thanks for keeping me sharp. Best regards from your biggest fan.
  • agelfederico
    Wopaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
  • It is easier to get the weeds when they are small...
Small weeds can do so much damage if they are kept, dont let them fester in your and your teams mind. Get rid of them as soon as possible!
  • The examples you give are very helpful in describing what the seasons look like inside of a networking marketing business and what to do. Thank you
  • maariee
Thank you Eric, great show. I will remember.
  • coltsco
How very true....distractions seem to help develop excuses, and we all know what happens then,
  • I have to admit, I let weeds grow hoping to turn them into something more healthy, which they never seem to do

    Great advice, act quickly

    btw nice shirt
  • Protection of your hard work is only logical... Totally agree Eric. When distractions are identified, you need to put a stop to them.
  • susanclark
#358 - Protect & Defend Your MLM Organization - Summer has come in our business and it is time to protect our organizations from distractions, negativity. I learned too late to get rid of the weeds. It can cost you your organization. I love the analogy, Eric.
  • ockaren
Protect and defend! Never thought about it in this context, but I know it to be true first hand. This is a very important concept to grasp and a good reminder to be alert. If we are to be protectors, we must be alert and at the ready to defend. Thanks Eric!
  • dstfa96
I will do everything that I can to protect my team from distractions as well as train them to deal with negativity!

This is some great info...Thx Eric!
  • Inger
    Success -is- a decision.
    So decide.
  • brigittapatel
    Great advice......
  • Mcolesica
You are amassing Eric, having a great sense of internal movement into an organization.Yes, your lesson is just in point ! We have to protect our team from all kinds of attacks. In this moment I have reacting against of one of the " cancers", putting the people together and increasing their believe and confidence.
    Thank you again !
  • Dancingwithjoy
    Huah!
  • Build, Develop and Protect, 3 keywords of a Leader.
  • MagnusEdvald
    Good show.
  • Rasdaniels
Great advice. I've never heard this before. Will listen to this recording several times.
  • Makes a LOT of sense. I can't agree more about the quickness of pulling a weed.
  • timandtricia
Thanks for the advice. It makes sense for a number of reasons. As leaders we all want to protect "our" organization and business but we all should want to protect our loyal friends and partners even more. The threats can be damaging to a mature organization but can be devastating to a fragile, new dreamer.
  • ALL DISTRACTIONS ARE EQUAL. I really liked that comment Eric. Be it another company or somebody could be doing something that produces no duplication. It could also be that the new prospect never makes their home business a priority from day one.

The best Defense against DISTRACTION is a good offense. Yes! Act quickly in order to protect the healthy growth. It is so true that it is Not possible to overreact to cancer, something that has the chance to kill the growth in my organization.

One other thought. What I do as a pro networker is to sort. I sort people coming into my business and I sort people once they are here. Do they have a passionate reason for making a change in their lives? Are they fed up enough to say 'enough is enough?' Or are they just playing with the idea of making a change? So another part of this equation is to sort people and find those who have a reason to stay here "UNTIL" they see success. I refer to Jim Rohn's 2 minute video on being "broke and stupid" http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=9050809... At -this- time in Jim's life he "decided" to be a success. With anyone who has -that- kind of motivation and dedication, I must protect. Always.

But, those who have to be talked into doing my business will also have to be talked into going to work.

In four words: Success -is- a decision.
So decide. And for those who decide
-yes-, those will be those who I will
    protect and work with.

To your fabulous success! dave sommers
  • Inger
    Again... great summary!
  • Rasdaniels
    Dave, great summation!
  • When summer comes if the business is a lottery ticket or a hobby commitment the business is the distraction. We were trained to take the summer off, be on vacation and unless your generated commitments are bigger than the thrown commitments you have adopted, summer will eat your spring seeds and the weeds and lack of rain will kill the rest. Forget about fall, you won’t make it through summer.
  • Marion
Thanks again for all your amazing advice and training.
I love how you explain everything, your analogies bring everything to life for me.
  • Great analogy and advice, thanks again Eric. Have a great weekend.
  • 358:
    Summer............
Protecting from distraction of loosing the focus, loosing the system!
Had just yesterday a team BBQ, having all of them together again to make sure not to loose the group power!

Protect! Eliminate distractions. What a vital time.
  • Ernesto_Busnelli
    All angles well rounded.
  • carybennett
For sure have to protect, there are lots of naysayers and negativity out there for sure. Love the seasons your covering.
  • well said! There is strength is a group of people staying on track without distractions, great video!
  • The only thing that eliminates distractions are results.
  • Graham Caddell
Summer is definitely the time to "protect". Just like applying sunscreen in the summer you gotta be prepared for all seasons. Great stuff Eric. Have a good weekend!
  • Natalie Thackston
I disagree. Totally. All distractions are NOT equal and I'm kinda tired of getting the 'less than', 'not measuring up', attitude from others. There can be a huge difference between business distractions and personal distractions. Can be. Sometimes the line is blurred, granted. But, when something serious is going on in your life, it deserves attention. I've been in such a situation for a spell now. Might it mean less business success because of less business focus and activity? Certainly. But, if I decide to pay attention to my family or my health, at the expense of business success, that expense is MUCH more likely to be temporary if my decision is met with support rather than criticism because I will be comfortable and willing to return once my world is better. And that's a good thing for me and my contacts and my upline. I applaud those people who are able to build their businesses while fighting Cancer, for instance. But that's just not me. And that's ok.
  • #358 Summer is the time to nurture and protect what you’ve started.
Distractions come in. It’s necessary to act fast and decisively.
What an interesting analogy, Eric - comparing phases of NM to the 4 seasons.

Golfer: "Please stop checking your watch all the time. It's too much of a distraction."
    Caddy: "It's not a watch - it's a compass."
  • Good powerful message. Thank you again!
  • Jillian
Thanks as always for sound and powerful advice. Love the analogies.
  • I am so glad to hear you say this. I am constantly bombarded with people offering me a new way to do business. Some of the information is very excited but I had to put blinders on and kill the noise. My company has put a system in place that has proven to be successful for many years. I teach this system to my group and we repeat it throughout the entire group. Great Video!
  • ritafulton
Got It! Now off to apply it.

Thank you Eric. Everyone have a great weekend and prosper.
  • Gakungu
Thank you for the advice, Eric.
  • Phillip
Nice message and valuable information. We need to understand how to run our business, like a business and weeding out the weeds, is a great analogy to run an effective business.
  • kgoren
One of my favorite past times is gardening. I love planting the seeds, nurturing the plants and watching them grow. So I love the analogies that you are using to explain this business. They make perfect sense.
  • I picked up an important point you mentioned. People in your downline having success but doing it incorrectly. That's huge, they need to follow the culture not do what they feel like doing,,,thanks Eric this is sooooo powerful!!
  • Michael Capilli
What a perfect message that I needed to hear. Thank you Eric.
  • Michael Gordon
Good stuff - there are plenty of distractions out there, all right.
    Michael
  • carolbarrett
Protect and Defend -- thanks Eric.
  • Cee_G
Interesting comment that all distractions are equal. That is so true. I am enjoying the "farming" analogies. They make alot of sense.
  • Great stuff as always ...

I think this post can be a contradiction to the "3 Question for MLM Success" (http://networkmarketingpro.com/2010/07/19/3-questions-for-mlm-success-nmpro-354/)

Why? There You tell to go inline w/ people that are goning in the direction YOU like to go, but THAT can also mean that You have to go outside the team system, and then you become the "weed".

    Tuff choice, Catch 22 ;-)
  • Great lesson, Take the successful farmer for example through a 12 month cycle (the seasons) and apply that to your business.
  • I would pick something you said and give it emphasis: Nurture your crop.

If you feed your seeds (downlines) with enough nutrients (books, videos, talks) they will become inoculated against weeds.

    Love you all
    Alfredo Rodrigues
  • We can't hope distractions will go away by themselves. We MUST be proactive and handle the situation quickly. Focused, consistent effort - with the blinders on - is crucial!

    Best to you,
    Scott
  • tomlacey
Protecting the people and culture of yur organization is a key ingredient in maintaing log term success.
  • Erik
Great talk . And I clearly see I still have a lot to learn
  • Ger
Wonderful 'seasons' learning. So easy and clear. It has a rhythm I can get behind. Love your shirt today Eric!
  • Miguel Cortez
Thank for going over it with me.... The Seasons... :)
  • Kjell Englund
I like this descriptions of seasons in the business, it´s easy to understand and it´s all so clear.
  • Great show Eric! Fired up and focused!
    Alex Tita
    Here as promised.
  • Dylan Cooper
Really good concepts to take on board. Thank you.
  • Germarl
Activity is the best defence - positive business building focused on results - to make progress in spite of the 'Hot Summer' when things can wilt and die....Positive activity keeps the mind focused on the 'End Game' and away from distractions...
  • David1pierson
Summer is tough... lots of distractions... plus, lots of internet stuff that just seems that all people want to do now...
  • Hi Eric,

What you say is really good info and I focus on this a lot but I have one question for you: Some weeds are hardly recognizable as weeds in the beginning because the look just like the good plant. By the time they have grown a bit you actually think it is a beautiful plant and you decide to let it grow (ie you get lured into thinking this weedperson with amazing growth actually does have a better system). What to do in such situations; what if you don't recognize the weed till you yourself have been affected?
  • Hey Eric, the better your training, the quicker you recognize bad teaching/training within your group.

A personal example. Early on in my mlm journey I was on 16 training calls a week from what I felt at the time were the best in our industry. I really absorbed all they had to say and applied their principles. So, at my company's event I met Robert Hollis who at that time (in a previous company) spent two hours with me. I left the convention and -stopped- all but one weekly training call. Why? Because Robert showed me how this industry can and should be -very- simple. Simple duplicates. Complex training is gone, one level later in my organization, so why learn or train something that doesn't duplicate?

So Rene, here's the question to ask. Is what "So and so" new rep teaches or does, easy to duplicate, or not? If it isn't easy to duplicate then recognize it as a weed.

It took me a long time to unlearn bad training. But hey, you are learning from Eric and he in my book is one of my top three all time trainers. Watch all the videos and be ready to grow in a way that you have not previously seen. To your a-ma-zing success! dave
  • That is not exactly what I meant. It is easy to recognize the personal development junkies. But how do you recognize someone who appears to be growing fast and to be duplicating one and two levels down and how do you prevent those types that you recognizes as frauds but other leaders don't, to influence your team. If everyone tells everyone that it is a beautiful plant and you are the one to recognize him/her as the weed they truly are, how do you prevent that person to infect your team?
  • Let's see if I got this right. Someone comes aboard. Their skill set allows them to enroll several people a couple of generations deep. They 'might' turn out to be a great leader, or not. And all of a sudden you realize that their influence on your 'team' is pulling that part of your group apart? Is this what you are saying?

If so, there's not much you can do. They enrolled the new team members and they are theirs. But since they aren't your personally enrolled, you can't really do anything. BUT if they are getting back to the team that you built or that spills under them your best defense is leading by example.

Another favorite mentor Tom Challan would say this. "Lead By Example" Spend 90% of your time enrolling and 10% doing everything else. When people ask, what do I do you will answer, do as I do. (access his free training here http://priorityteam.infusionsoft.com/go/pthp/sommers/) and listen to the 'getting started' call. There is a paid side but you can learn a lot by hearing the archived free conference calls only.

By doing the things that make money and make your business easy to duplicate will allow your reps to want to work with you instead of working with someone who will infect your organization.

    I hope that helps. dave
  • Jonathan
Great advice. You must protect and while there is no way of overreacting to any of those elements - it's a matter of handling it with professionalism. Love the concept surrounding the seasons. :) Looking forward to fall.
