When you were a kid, were you afraid of the monsters under your bed or in your closet? Or maybe you are now in charge of checking for monsters before your child will go to sleep? Children have wild imaginations, and their fears often manifest themselves in the form of monsters. When we grow up, we know there are no monsters under our bed, but when it comes to fear, our imaginations can still get the better of us.
I hear about a lot of fears in the Network Marketing community. People are afraid of being rejected by prospects. They’re afraid of talking on the phone. They’re afraid they won’t make any money. They’re afraid.
Your Fear Controls Your Business
I completely understand. When I first started out in this profession, I was terrified. I didn’t even have enough money to pay for the rent let alone to invest in a business. And I was convinced I didn’t know anybody to recruit. My strategy was to call all of the family friends before my dad got to them. I approached my prospects with my shoulders hunched because I was just sure they were going to reject me. I let my fear run the business.
Too many people in Network Marketing let their fear control what they do—or rather don’t do—in their business. You fear being rejected, and so you never pick up the phone to call your prospects. You fear not making money, and so you don’t do any of the necessary actions to actually make money. And then you wonder why your business isn’t growing.
Take Back Your Business
I know that it can be scary starting your own business. But all of your fears are simply the monsters under your bed. They are just figments of your imagination. Your prospects won’t eat you if you approach them. A single rejection or even a hundred will not kill your business. The money monster won’t hoard all of its treasure if you keep working hard. All of your monsters are simply your fears running wild.
Instead of imagining the best, you are imagining the worst in every scenario, and you are letting that fear control you. Take back your business. Stop focusing on the negative and imagine the positive. The mind is a powerful tool. Your whole outlook on life can change if you simply think about the positive instead of the negative.
What Are You Afraid Of?
If you are afraid to call prospects on the phone, write out outlines or scripts and practice them. Practice in the mirror or with a friend. Get comfortable just saying the words out loud before you call up your prospects. And if you stumble, that’s okay. You don’t have to be perfect, you just have to call! Force yourself to make two calls a day, then five, and work your way up. The more you do it, the more comfortable and confident you will become.
If you are afraid you won’t succeed or make any money, keep working and invest in personal development so that you learn the skills. I know for a fact that you won’t make any money if you don’t work. So, keep putting in the time, keep getting in front of prospects, and keep learning. Network Marketing isn’t a “get rich quick” scheme. You have to work hard, and it might take you awhile to really start earning that income you want. But if you keep improving your skills and getting out there in front of prospects, you will reach your goals.
Overcome Your Monsters
I’m not saying you shouldn’t be afraid at all. But you need to keep working in spite of the fear. If your determination and dreams are bigger than your fears then you can do anything. You can call up ten new prospects a day and schedule meetings. They don’t have to know that you practiced with your spouse for two days before finally calling them. You can face every rejection that comes your way. It just means those people weren’t ready. You can work hard every single day until you finally reach your income goal. It’s okay it took you three months longer than you expected.
You might always be a little afraid, and you might never get rid of the monsters under your bed. But if you keep working, keep believing, and keep growing, then those monsters won’t ever be able to stop you.
