Network Marketing may be one of the most misunderstood professions on earth. There are several misconceptions and myths about it. People think that only those on top make money, most people don’t earn anything, or it’s not a real business. Even though there are numerous facts out there that prove otherwise, there are still damaging misconceptions out there.
This is frustrating to many distributors who think that people just need to understand and wake up. Which is true, but I think the Network Marketing profession needs to look at itself and do better.
Sometimes the negative perceptions of Network Marketing are created by the way we present the products or the opportunity to the world. Sometime we get so excited that we misrepresent our product and opportunity. We start throwing around big language about our products that we can’t substantiate. We call the product a miracle cure. Say it’s guaranteed to create certain results. There is so much hype, and no substantiation behind that claim.
Such actions decrease the credibility of the Network Marketing profession. As we go out there and create more and more hype, people believe it less and less. So, think about what you can do to make sure that within your organization you are making responsible claims about your product or service. If anything, you need to be under-hyping the product. Even if you’ve had incredible results, you can’t use that language. If you continue to over-hype, there’s going to be more and more regulatory scrutiny inside of your company and the profession itself.
Here’s what I want you to understand—the truth is enough. When it comes to the products and services we offer, we provide an important educational need in the marketplace. There are products and services that can improve the quality of a person’s life, and we need to educate the public about the qualities of that product. But we don’t need to over-hype it. The truth is enough. So, be careful with the type of language you use because hype doesn’t serve our profession.
